price reduction due to lens scratch?

Is there any ballpark as to how much to reduce a lens' price when there is a scratch on the front element? I saw a nice DA* zoom lens that normally runs $850 or so used in excellent condition (according to this site), and I am wondering what to offer when it has a tiny scratch about half way out from center. The seller says it doesn't affect image quality, and offered a return if I think it does. Assuming it doesn't affect IQ, what's a decent price to offer? I want to keep resale in mind if I go to other lenses down the road that make this one unnecessary. Thanks!

The seller is probably right about image quality. It takes a fairly large defect in the front element to see an effect in photos. The right kind of scratch and the right kind of oblique light might increase flare, but a hood will fix that. However, a scratch on the glass can really affect the value, especially when unscratched lenses are readily available. Something rare or unusual might not take as big a hit. Something that you can get new, the value may drop 40% or more.

It depends what DA* it is, 850 is still big money. Personally I would never buy a scratched lens regardless of how much it costs, but that's just me because I want everything to be near perfect. But 40 percent in price dropage sounds right.

It's the 50-135. The guy wants $675, and the average price listed on the reviews here is $850, I believe. Fleabay sellers have them for the mid 700's new, so I guess a "safer" price for resale concerns would be in the $500's, huh?

maybe $450. just tell the seller that you are too anal about scratch-free/clean glass lenses.

Oh, I've seen that ad. It does not look like there's a long line of customers ahead of you for it. The warranty isn't mentioned so I assume it's up. It definitely is not worth $675. If I could get it for less than $500 cash (so no shipping, tax or paypal) I would be really interested. The key question is, will that offer be insulting to him. If you decide to pay more, you sort of commit yourself to keeping and using the lens for longer.

A lot of us are obsessed about gears not about photography. So tiny scratch on the lens mount is already a taboo, not to mention a little scratch on the front element
