Depends on your definition of better. Both are very decent "fast 50s". The 55/1.8 is reputed to be sharper than the various 50/1.4 lens at settings wider than f/2.8 (some say f/4). The 50/1.4 is reputed to have somewhat better bokeh because of its eight-bladed aperture.

What it comes down to is price, convenience, and your needs. If you need the extra 1/2 stop and want the convenience of the auto aperture and green button metering, then the M 50/1.4 is your lens. If you need better optical quality at f/1.8 and f/2 and don't mind having to use an adapter and loosing auto aperture, then the SMC Tak 55/1.8 is your lens.

Are you trying to make up your mind for a purchase? If so, I might suggest buying both and selling the one that appeals to you less. I might also suggest muddying the waters a little and throwing the SMC Tak 50/1.4, K 55/1.8, K 50/1.4, M 50/1.7, A 50/1.7 and A 50/1.4 into the mix.

Pretty much agree with stevebrot, in my experience with a Super Tak 55mm f/1.8, Super Tak 50mm f/1.4, SMC Tak 55mm f/1.8 and M50mm f/2.0:

SMC 55mm has best contrast at wider than f/2.8 settings, Super 55mm has smoothest OOF blur, but the 50mm does things the 55mm lenses just can't do, with a look they just don't have.

I just got the SMC 55mm and the Super 55mm will probably be sold, but I may sell the Fuji 55mm f/1.8 that I have as it's quite a bit bigger and draws more similarly to the Super 55mm than the others.
