Interesting.

Old municipality equipment would be my guess - Police, Fire investigators, etc.

Does everyone always buy a Vivitar 283 flash to go with their K1000? Is it a K1000 thing that you must only buy a Vivitar 283?
I guess it could have come in a kit for many of the cameras but so often I see people using that flash with that camera.

I smell a poll.

Oh. My mistake. That was just gas. Sorry.

As long as 35mm film is available they are not obsolete.
And digital is not an "upgrade" IMO.

Economics of the upgrade to digital (from my daughter's experience while Editor-in-Chief of a nationally competitive HS Yearbook):
  1. Receive notice that NEA and State mandate (unfunded) two additional "Health Instructors" be added to the Athletics Department Faculty.
  2. Obtain State or Federal Grant $ to "computerize" your school.
  3. Purchase eight iMac's and software licenses to outfit the Newspaper and Yearbook production staffs (Journalism counts as a "Professional Development" curriculum in Missouri and gets 2x computer dollars versus, say, Biology)
  4. Connect to internet
  5. Instantly reduce "Operating Budget" (local $) of Journalism by
    1. Percent savings obtained by submitting digital print-ready files to newspaper and yearbook printers direct to press over the internet
    2. Entire cost of consumables (film, chemicals, paper, layout supplies)
    3. "Retiring" the nationally-recognized Photography (Art 30 and 40) and Journalism (SJ 30 and 40) "analog-trained" teachers, replacing them with recent college graduates who have digital "teacher training" - at 1/3 the salaries.
    4. Install new "Teaching/Learning Methods" in which the EIC's and Functional Editors do the teaching. Therefore 1 Journalism "Department Head" can handle both the Newspaper and the Yearbook, eliminating two FTE's (Full-Time Employee teachers).
  6. Use the savings on consumables alone to purchase 2x as many Canon digital bodies as you formerly had K1000's. Upgrade them every second year. In alternate years upgrade lenses.
  7. Transfer the Gross "Operating Budget" savings to the Athletic Department for two State-mandated, unfunded Health Instructor salaries.
My daughter was the last Editor-in-Chief to have had wet darkroom instruction in Photography. At least photography Editor is still the stepping-stone to EIC.

If you read it twice, you will see that this only works because the Feds or the State bought the iMac's. Same economics for us enthusiasts who do our own digital photoprocessing now - digital is only cheaper because we capitalized the computer on some other HH budget line.
