Where does everyone get their M42 - PK adapters?

Hello,

I was disappointed to find that my $10 ebay M42 to P-K adapter meant losing infinite focus (infact, focus was limited to about 10 metres).
It appears that every one of these adapters I can find on ebay suffers the same problem (the flange adds thickness I guess).

Where does everyone get their mount adapters? Is there some untapped source? The only one I've been able to find is on the pentax web store but I feel there must be some ones on ebay that function correctly..

surely?

Jeremy

Well, if it's any help, the product code for the genuine one is "30120", so googling for a suitable word combination including that number might bring up something.

Well... no, there's no untapped resource really. There are three kinds of adapters: ones with flanges that can't focus to infinity; ones without flanges and without retainer clips that can focus to infinity but can also overturn in the mount and get stuck; and ones without flanges and with retainer clips, and the only one I know that fits that bill is the official one by Pentax. I'm not sure why there are no others built like that I've seen, but if there are and they're cheaper, they should work just as well.

35 euros for a piece of mass-produced machined steel is a bit steep. IMO.

Agree. I compromised and bought this :

M42 to Pentax k10D k100D K200D K20D DL adapter(silver) - eBay, Other Accessories, Photographic Accessories, Cameras. (end time 26-Dec-09 19:06:30 AEDST)

I only plan to use M42 lenses occasionally, and just for mucking around - so not gonna drop 7x the price on a pentax adapter.

I picked up a used genuine Pentax adapter for $20 including shipping on eBay. It was the best place I found where you could get a decent price, these things are hardly worth the $35+shipping that pentax charges.

It was actually funny because the seller put the adapter in about a 3"x3"x3" box with a bunch of foam wrap...the adapters are so small and light it took me a while to actually find it in the box...hahaha....

I also just picked up an M39-m42 adapter on eBay as well from a seller in Ukraine for under $8 and it's metal so, if and when it ever shows up I can start looking at the few M39's out there.

I'm sure the adapter will work nicely, but any M39 lens you get will only be able to be used for very close macro work. M39 lenses have a different registration distance than M42, and will not focus even close to infinity.

yup, knew that part. Still thanks for point it out though, since I did not include that limitation. I just bought it on a whim for access to other fun lenses I might run across even with the added issue of the registration distance.

KEH. The spring tab on my generic brand adaptor ring lasted a bit less than two years. The much better quality Pentax adaptor is worth the extra money. Why spend hundreds of dollars or more on a camera and then not buy an adaptor that was made for it?

Just get the genuine one. You'll hate yourself later on if you don't.

I got mine at Henry's. $25, although, they had to order one in. Took about a week.

This is the one I use:

Amazon.com: M42 lens to Pentax PK K Mount Adapter Ring infinity focus guaranteed K20D K10D K200D K-M: Camera & Photo

Look at the photos, then click on "these sellers" and Rainbow Imaging should come up.

For $8.39 + shipping it's not bad. Don't panic when taking it off, it takes a bit of practice to figure out how to turn it with the key (the key helps grab that retainer clip). If you're afraid of it getting stuck, you can also unscrew the retainer clip, screw the adapter tightly on the lens, then mount the lens as you would a K mount lens.

I've also seen plenty of adapters on ebay, if you want another source.

Jeremy, try getting in touch with C. R. Kennedy as they are the Oz Pentax importer. The Oz Pentax website lists the genuine Pentak M42 to K mount adapter so if they can't supply direct then pointing you in the right direction should be an option.
I bought mine from Henrys in Canada which left me change from $50 AUD and unlikely to cause the grief that some of the flangeless copies can cause like getting stuck on the camera.
