PENTAX -M f 1:2/ 50mm smc LENS

Could someone let me know what they think of this lens: PENTAX -M f 1:2/ 50mm smc LENS

I know very little about it. I'm thinking about bidding on it on eBay. Apparently it's in very good nick.

I've googled the lens type but there seems to be no exact match (that I've found!) - but fortunately I've stumbled across this forum.

Thanks in advance

Chris

It was sold as the standard lens with many Pentax film cameras in the 1980's

Optically it is a fine lens, but it is the slowest of the 50mm "normal" lenses and for that reason does not command a high price. I paid less than £10 for mine.

The more popular 50mm lens of the M series was the f1.7 I got mine with my first Pentax camera, an MX in 1980 ! The 1.7 will cost more..£25/35 I think, and the fastest M , the 1.4 will be even more .

Do an ebay completed listings search before you buy to check prices.

Also because it is quite a bit noticeably softer than any of the other 50's at apertures below f/4 or so. And because it is so common - supply & demand keep the price low. $10 is overpaying, given that $20 will usually get you the *much* better M50/1.7.

As for finding info on a lens, it occurs to me the problem is that people don't know which terms in the name of the lens are significant. The relevant ones here are "M" (which says that it is manual focus, manual aperture, and part of the "M" series of relatively small/lightweight mostly metal lenses), the focal length 50mm, and the maximum aperture "1:2" (usually given as f/2, or in combination with the focal length as 50/2). So basically, any lenses you see described as M 50 f/2, M50/2, Pentax M 50/2, or anything like that - they're all talking about this same lens.

Go for the M50/1.7 instead. Probably the sharpest of the Pentax 50 primes.

I have two of these 50's,and they aren't bad for the price.like Marc said, the 501.7 is a much better lens and if your lucky to find a f1.4,i think it's even better. But getting back to the 1.2,it's a good lens for the price. It shouldn't dissapoint you too much.

I've never used any of the f/1.2 lenses. They strike me as speciality items for people who value shallow DOF over virtually all else, and I'm not one of them.

I believe the f2/50 M Pentax is underrated, it is a fine lens!

it is a fine lens at f8. being an 50/f2 lens with a subpar performance at wider openings makes it a huge disappointment. compare it with the K50/1.8 or K55/2, and you would obviously see what sealed it's poor reputation.

addition:

but if you like a softish-effect on your image from wide open til f5.6 (much brighter/evident and softest at f2), this lens might appeal you in a certain way.
