Not sure if it's the "best" but another worth mentioning is the old Vivitar 55mm f/2.8 which does go down to 1:1. Manual only but can be had pretty cheap.

I just bought one so maybe I'm biased.

Interestingly, these days, Lester A Dine uses the Sigma 105 f/2.8 lens.

What is the Best Macro 1:1 Lens under these criteria?
....
Most people will answer like I will, thru the prism of what they know and/or own. So I'll just say it, the best is "what I have". Well, if it's not the best, it's up there with the best of'm.

You can click the "gear" link in my sig and which lens I'm talking about should be obvious. If not, I'm talking about the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 125mm f/2.5. It's quite fast for low light use, pretty much completely free of CA, near 2 full revolutions of focus range for precise and easy focusing, 1:1, yadayadayada. I'm still kicking myself for not buying one or two extras for future re-sale at the time I bought it when it was getting scarce.

There are too many candidates!

Are there any quantitative measures of which is actually best by a sharpness measure?

Aren't all diffraction limited lens/sensor combinations equivalent?

Say I've a sensor with a 5 micron pixel pitch which is equivalent to about f:16 (I think.) I imagine there are a few lenses that are indistinguishable at f:16.
