It wouldn't be if we're comparing prints of the same size, at least up to the limit of the resolution of the image with the lower pixel count. But if by "pixel peeping" we specifically mean examing an image at 100%, that's a larger magnification ratio, and magnification is one of the major components in a DOF calculation. It's a factor that some simplistic models don't allow you to control - they imply assume "typical" print sizes viewed from 'typical" distances by a person with "typical" visual acuity. But it's pretty easy to see practical exampels of thus - at thumbnail or even web sizes, a part of an image might look in focus, but viewing larger shows it isn't. Imagine a camera that only shot thumbnail or web resolution in the first place, and you'd have direct proof of this concept.

Same here. As long as we don't take them too seriously, they can be fun and educational, if not always in the way we thought we'd be when making or posting them.
As for the OP, even though I've been saying the differences at f/8 shoudl be minimal in practice, that doens't mean I'm insensitive to the differences. Of the lenses I have experience with, I'd be using the DA40, M or A 50/1.7, or DA70 for this, any of which are indeed clearly sharper than the kit lens overall, even if the magnitude of the difference at f/8 might not be anything worth writing home about.
