Help - Are these the same lenses?

It sure looks like they are - possibly different ages/versions of the same lens?
Thanks for your help.

Right, they are different lenses. One is a Takumar-F zoom, and the other is an SMC Pentax-F zoom. The Takumar zoom doesn't have the multi-coating the SMC version does, and possibly has an inferior optical design.

Well, that makes sense. I have had some trouble finding any information about the Takumar version. I guess I'll skip it, unless I can get it for el-cheapo $$.

Thanks for the answer!

There are conflicting reports on the optical design; the dimitrov site (google dimitrov pentax to find it) lists the takumar F version with 10 elements in 8 groups, while the SMC version having 13 elements in 9 groups, however they both have a weight of 555 grams - the odds of them sharing the same weight/dimensions and not having the same optical formula are pretty slim in my opinion. I have owned both, and held them side by side and they are identical in every physical external dimension (down to if the labeling were covered you would not be able to tell them apart), including weight. I would lean towards both lenses sharing the same optical formula, with the Takumar-F lacking the SMC lens coating. They also both have a short AF throw distance, meaning as long as you have adequate light they are quite fast to focus.

Edit: Between the two, if you can find the Takumar-F for $60-70 it is quite a good value on its own.

Great information. I already have the 80-320 Pentax lens so I've got the range mostly covered, but I am a sucker for a bargain and like the looks of this lens. Thanks again!

Your question is a common one and Wally pretty much sums up the answer. Pentax made two different lines of lenses that bore the Takumar name. The first series were made from the 1950s through the early 1970s and were made using the M42 screw mount to fit the Pentax cameras of the day. Those screw mount Takumars are of legendary quality and performance and are well-worth owning even today.

In the 1980s, Pentax began producing lenses for export only that bore the Takumar name. These lenses are considered to be inferior in both build and optical characteristics to the main line SMC Pentax lenses and were intended as a lower-priced alternative on the U.S. and other markets. They were also marketed under the Cosmicar and CPC labels. Although these "faux" Takumars are usually looked down on, evidence from posts by other forum users indicates that they about as good as the various off-brand lenses of the time and often not that bad.

If you are considering purchase, don't pay premium money.
