What the hell?

Now I've seen many "interesting" prices but this one kind of stunned me:
Pentax 20-35mm smc f/4 FA AL - Only 1,249.00 - Park Cameras Online

is there any reason for this ridiculous price?

Well, there's a reason. It's either greed or stupidity. Greed in charging a huge markup to take advantage of a smaller segment of photographers, or, stupidity in buying stock at ridiculous prices and now having to (try to) pass that ridiculous price on to others.

Anyone know what the original list price was for this lens? The catalog listing may well represent an out-of-date offering from years back. The Web is full of this sort of stuff that comes up on a search, but is not available and/or with inaccurate pricing.

Hi Steve,

I have a complete retail price list from @ 2003/4 (I think). The MSRP for this lens was $792 USD, but I'm sure the street price was considerably less.

Here are the prices listed, so you can get an idea -- I'd say that @ 30% off would be a fair approximation for the street price for the more common lenses (this is a direct cut and paste from the list):

Wow. That would translate to a non-US price of about $1000...far below what the vendor has on his page. I can't imagine that it was priced much more even when it was released in 1989.

Thanks for doing the research. BTW...where did you get your list?

Steve

(Could not help noticing that the list price for the FA 35/2 was $475...the same as today despite claims of a price increase...)

Hi Steve,

I stumbled upon it while looking for obscure goodies from some of the lesser known Pentax dealers. This was posted on the Opticsplanet.com site, but I can't find it again after a quick look, so I'm glad I copied and pasted the contents to a Word file that I keep with the rest of my Pentax stuff. I just took a wild stab in the dark about the date -- but since there are some digital P&S, but no *ist DSLRs nor DA lenses, I figured the latest it could be would be early 2000's.

I tried PMing a copy from here, but I couldn't figure out if I could attach a Word 2k3 doc file or an RTF. The software doesn't allow enough characters, so just pasting it to the PM didn't work. . .

If you'd like a copy, shoot me an e-mail addy via PM and I'll send it out to you. Having the Pentax part# and some idea of a price to expect is nice to have, and there are even a number of A series lenses listed.

Ah, Yes! Opticsplanet.com! I have seen the list you are referring to. I don't know the date it was compiled, but it has a strange mix of recent and vintage stuff. The page was on their Web site, but could not be reached by any of their links. I was always curious as to whether any of those items were actually in inventory. IIRC they had a full selection of eyepiece diopters.

Looking at snostorm's list I'm suddenly wondering if anyone has a SMCP-FA* 250-600mm f/5.6 they'd be willing to part with
I have a couple of hundred Canadian I'd be willing to part with
