Captain of the Sea, happy new year and I think you will definitely have a winner with this lens.

Here's a pic from it from user Noel, he has posted some more on the same thread, https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/50994-m42-crew-8.html#post822233
Beware, pics from Noel are excellent regardless the lens .-)

From what you are saying you are about to get this lens from a DTL camera:

Source: M42 Mamiya 55_1.4

... and not this lens:

Source: M42 Mamiya SX 55_1.4

AFAIK those two are the same in glass but slightly different in coating. I got the SX and it is a big fave of mine.
With either of these lenses you get the original Carl Zeiss Contarex Planar design from 1959.

The non-SX lens should be straight M42 with an A-M switch and nada mas.
The SX has a protruding pin (file off or just pull out) and a protruding aperture ring (file off) as well as no A-M switch (manual conversion through opening the back).

I'm sure you will have one of the best allround lenses with either of them.
Get it !
Georg

Thanks Georg, Happy New Year to you as well. Yes it is on a dtl-1000 which I had assumed was M-42 but was confused by info I'd found on the SX lenses.
Was the SX a variation on the K mount?

The SX had a Mamiya variation on the M42 screw mount. They have the modifications that Georg suggested be filed off. There is more information about them and Mamiya/Sekor 35mm cameras and lenses at:

Supplementing Steve's link here's one more about those Mamiya M42 cameras: M42 Cameras

Seacapt, if you have a chance to get the information whether the lens you are about to get is SX or not it might be useful for you. As I said the SX is M42 but has some tweaks which make for the tinkerer's joy but the plain user's disgust .-)

Yep, the SX has that famous extra pin which you'd want to remove.
In any case, I find that this lens does produce very special bokeh. I definitely would recommend this as a cheaper alternative to say....a planar 50mm or a nokton 58mm.

And thanks George for that kind compliment but it IS indeed the lens that gave it the special bokeh tinge.

Happy new year , everybody

Thanks for the info. The lens appears to be of the older type. Will post some test shots in M42 Crew thread when it arrives.
