The rental agreement I looked at was specific about taking a lens out of the country. Have you found a place that doesn't have restrictions on travel?

Thank you

Hah!, I've never looked into it myself, one Canon shooter who took one of their bazookas for a safari said he rented it. I would love to know the answer for this, the restriction would be a bummer.

How would you compare the 2 as far as sharpness and color rendering.
Or maybe you already answered that question?
The 60-250mm is a fantastic lens and the colour rendering imo is superior to the 100-300mm. Sharpness I would say is about the same.

Where the Sigma wins for me is that it will take the EX 1.4x teleconverter very well and even with the 2x the IQ is more than passable most of the time.

The 60-250mm just does not perform well with teleconverters, I have tried it with the Tamron 1.4x and the Pentax 1.7x .. the IQ just wasn't anywhere near as good as the Sigma.

The 60-250mm is also very slow to focus compared to the 100-300mm

If I never wanted to go over 250mm I would take the Pentax lens.

Then you don't need the 60-250mm. :ugh:

Thank you

Sorry Russell, I quess I asked for that one. I should have said the 60-250 covers nearly all the FL of the 70-200, 100-300. With the lenses you named I lose a lot of range.

Oren, I am quickly finding out that even the 100-300 is a large lens, and just doesn't fit into my plan of getting multiple small lenses for my k-7. So, anything to reach 600, even 300/2.8 with TC is going to be bulky and will find very little use.

Also, I don't print any photographs taken with long lenses, and I can see me needing something like this for safari's or other dedicated photo trips only, and I am planning to rent long lenses for such occasions.

But, if you will use these super telephotos more frequently, I will save up for the 300/2.8 and keep the 100-300 for now.
Sanjeevan, a 300-600mm would probably get the most used for me other than my macro lenses. I have interest in so many different areas of photography and I never stay with one thing too long ( this may be a hindrance ) but I always come back to the wildlife/birding. Maybe after I have a few more years under my belt ( no longer such a noob ) I will find a better balance.

I would have assumed the 60-250 would do great with the Tamron 1.4x.

For me I think the Pentax would work because the direction I am trying to go I really wouldn't be using it with a TC though. I will have the longer ranges covered.
But, right now might not be the best time to make that move. I still have a bunch of thinking to do.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

FWIW: Some of these SDM lenses don't work very well with PZ_Af teleconverters on the K10D and K20D but so far I have got them all to work using my K-7 or K-x.
Thank you
