Im surprised no one mentioned the siggy 105mm.... Much better construction and feel IMO than the tamron and a longer focal length wich makes everything in macro easier.

I've got thousands of shots with the lens but I personally like this one to show off the lens:

Look at that detail!!!!!!

That is a great lens too--no doubt--there are so many great choices for Macro in this range. Now if there was only this kind of choice, @ 180mm and further for Pentax, well then I would be a much happier camper. :0

Just Me Some incredibly nice shots above. Thanks for the advice, I think I will be going with the Tamron
I bought mine brand new, with an accompanying $60 rebate. Look for the Tamron rebates, which run often. Best!

That is most definitely an excellent shot yeatzee, and the sigma is certainly worth considering, and within the price range.

Have noticed those rebates Jewelltrail, currently I am seeing them as having expired at 31st Dec.

It will be about another 10 days before I have the spare cash to cover this splurge, but there is definitely a range of things to look at. Right now I think the Tamron is winning out though.

Personally I'd get whatever is cheaper as they are all great lenses. I got the sigma because of the more solid construction and cheaper price (didn't feel like waiting for a rebate to make the tamron nearly the same price).

What about the Tamron 6-Year warranty?

Well, at B & H, right this moment the Tamron is 459.95 no rebate

The Sigma is, right this moment, $479.95 no rebate

Sorry to say it looks like you are right--here is the road map for Tamron rebates for the 1st Qtr of 2010--2 macros on list, but no 90mm.

Looks like the Sigma Vs Tamron debate is going to rage here

I can get the Sigma for about 421AUD and the Tamron for around 455AUD both from Honkers Bonkers. Not a great deal of difference price wise, but after doing a few searches the Tamron definitely has more satisfied users than the Sigma.

If anyone is dissatisfied with either they need a reality check. Lenses dont get much sharper or more contrasty than these.

FWIW i've used the tamron before.....

There is always the used outlet which can come with a warranty if you grab the original receipt. I noticed, not long after posting the link here to our Marketplace, the used Tamron 90mm f 2.8 sold. But there are more out there. There is nothing wrong with going the used route, particularly when on a tight budget. You can find the Sigma used too--just keep an eye open--search Keh and Craiglist.

keh has vivitar 100 2.8 macros since before christmas till now, I looked it up and people say its the previous version of the famous 105 2.8 but still the same glass.

Mine should be at the mailing address in 2 days .

If I had your budget, I'll go with the sigma 105 just for its longer distance

Really .. for the Macro lens budget you have ... the ones you are looking at are pretty much all the same in quality .. there's negligible difference.

I myself purchased a Tamron 90mm Macro a couple of years ago new from a shop here in Sydney (then realised i should have purchased it from O/S).

It has never let me down ... the amazing at Macro work ... and simply stunning for AF long portraiture work (ie: chasing relatives kids around when playing outside) ... even with my flash on as well indoors for some longer work. I am always amazed at the quality of my Tammy.
