M42 Viv 135/2.8 w/whacky Adapter

Hi guys , this lens came in a box of stuff I bought to get a Mamiya 55/1.4 . It's in like new condition but when I looked closer it has a weird adapter mount. Whats up with the twin F stop scales , manual switch that springs back and crazy adapter lock? Anyone know what I've got here? Any instuctions out there? Is there a way to make it preset Fstops? The serial number indicates a Tokina built lens I think .

That's known as a "T4" lens & adapter. Vivitar and Soligor sold these. Later Vivitar sold a further development called "TX".

There are various threads around here with instructions on how to stopper the adapter to make the lens essentially a pre-set, it's easy to do, though I haven't done so myself.

There is a linkage in the T4 adapter that you can remove, it's held in by one screw. Once removed, the lens becomes, in effect, a preset. If you do this, keep the linkage in case you want to sell the lens later to a film camera user.

The adapter has 3 flathead screws around its edge. Remove these to take it apart and get to the linkage. You can leave it loose in there but it will be annoying.

I don't know the procedure, I only know that the lens itself it's very, very good.

I have it in mamiya brand (the same tokina one) and it's sharp from wide angle to F/11. Not problem at all. The balance is coldest with very nice colors. Do the work, the lens is worth it.

Thanks for the info guys. I found a few articles about it after you told me what it was. Will post a few test shots after I get a chance to do the modification.
