Some more information: minimum focus distance is 0.3m, like the non-close focus Vivitars. (The current version is 0.2 meters.) Aperture readout does say f1.7 wide open. I can get it to say f1.8 if I set the camera to use 1/3 stops. No blades are visible at either f1.7 or f1.8 so it's just an anomaly. I would prefer more focus throw but it's not that noticeable in use, and the AF versions appear to be worse. Exposure is consistent through the aperture range and accurate.
I'm not sure whether I had flare or condensation in the dog photo above, but I took today's photos to eliminate that as a factor, and the contrast is much more normal. It is lower wide open and improves stopping down as expected. Low contrast is mentioned in one review for the current AF version. I'll have to do some comparisons with my F28/2.8 to see.
Like I said, I'm thinking of replacing my Vivitar/Kiron 28mm f2. I like that lens except for the convenience of an A setting. The price I paid is about what the Vivitar would go for if it had a KA mount.
