Just took this with my DL and FA28mm. Taken at F2.8 wide open

Compare this with Tamron 90mm macro also at F2.8

As you can see the background subject in the 90mm shot is more blurred because it has less DoF. Interesting exercise. If I want bokeh I always have my DA200mm and a creamy bokeh is a guarantee

I want to start a thread about 28mm lens bokeh!

I have been shooting with the SMC-A 28mm F2 and to be honest, am not particularly thrilled with it's bokeh. Other aspects of the lens are great; small, fast, sharp 'A' lens. So I enjoy using it, but occasionally the bokeh is not nice. For example, I like the attached photo, but to my eye, the bokeh is distracting and busy.

So Im wondering which 28's are producing nice bokeh? Pentax brand or other, please share your 28mm prime lens bokeh!

It could be because of the highlights in the bokeh, if you had a background evenly lit, might not be so bad.

K 28mm F3.5

I know that these shots are nothing to write home about but they show a quite decent bokeh IMO. They are shot wide open, JPEG, and not PP'ed except from crop and a small amount of exposure compensation.

Kind regards

Is it normal to stop down a little for a better bokeh? With the lenses I have I notice that the bokeh often gets better 0.5 to 1 stop from wide open.

Kind regards

I am still trying to figure out the best way to shoot my 28 and how to make its bokeh look better. At this point, if I am going to try to isolate my subject with a narrow depth of field, and in effect have a large portion of the frame out of focus with this lens, I want the out of focus portion to be as out of focus as possible. The sorta out-of-focus, but not totally bokeh'd effect, like in the first picture that I posted, really turns me off. So to maximize the effect, I get close and shoot wide open...

I think you have to get real close and shoot wide open to get a totally blurred bokeh. However, I don't like it when the bokeh is so blurred that it's almost impossible to identify the content of the background.

Bokeh from my Kiron 28mm F2. I like this lens a lot, if only it doesn't flare so easily

Taken at wide open, ISO 1600 thus the noise/grain (which I found to my liking especially in the second pic)

Yes, both at F3.5 and close to min. focus distance. Sorry, forgot to add that before.

I also have a Kiron.
It has a wonderful bokeh and is very sharp stopped down.
Unfortunately(just like you), it is very prone to flare(washeout) and so I rarely use it.
Which is to bad really because it 8is a wonderfully constructed lens.

Flare, what flare? OK, maybe some flare. That 55mm filter ring makes hood selection a little annoying too.

I just got this lens in the mail an hour ago. It's a Sigma High-Speed Wide II 28mm f1.8 Aspherical. It's manual focus, KA mount, 58mm filter, 310 grams, 63mm long by 67mm diameter.

Two images wide open:

Contrast looks low, I'm not sure why. It could be condensation; the lens was pretty cold from the mail. My only goal is to replace the Vivitar/Kiron 28mm f2, so that will be my yardstick.

Like the newer AF Sigma, the camera says f1.7 wide open. I didn't get the hood. After these photos I tested a metal hood from a Takumar 85mm f1.9 and dimensions seem to work. Manual focus throw is extremely short, less than 90º. Seven aperture blades. Obviously this is a completely different design than the current 28/1.8. This lens is a little bulky next to the FA 35/2 - it would probably look OK next to an FA 31/1.8, though.

Sweet looking lens indeed.
I agree with the contrast

Almost looks like flaring in the dog scene.
Have you rowed through with arperture to see if it changes?
