Couldn't resist trying the DA*300/4

So long story short, right before Xmas I bought a new DA*300/4. I really wasnt even looking for one, I was actually looking to see if I could find a reasonably priced DA*60-250. But I ended up finding a new DA*300 (from Sears of all places)that was a pretty good deal so I just closed my eyes and hit "submit order".

Then after I got it, I decided I wasn't going to open it because I figured I should probably return it given that it wasn't exactly what I was planning on buying, nor did I really "need" it. Then curiousity got the better of me and I opened it up and tried it out. All I can say is *wow*. The lens is even sharper than I expected wide open. I can't wait to try it outside during the day, as my indoor, poorly lit room isn't the ideal place to handhold and try out a 300mm lens. That being said, I was really surprised that I was able to get pretty sharp shots wide open at pretty low shutter speeds.

As I said, there wasn't much light, but I took the picture below, handheld, with my Kx at f/4, 1/15s (!), iso 3200 and SR on. It's not going to win any award for the subject or composition, but I thought the picture was pretty good decent given the shutter speed and high iso setting.

By the way, the only thing that I wasn't crazy about was how the Kx and DA*300 felt together. I think if I keep this lens I'll need to pick up a K7 with grip

Yup. I think this lens is fantastic.

I've mostly shot with this lens outdoors without a tripod at ISO around 800 (to my eyes the K20D is still good at that ISO). With the K20D + grip, you can pull off portrait-oriented shots (of animals) handheld--on a relatively sunny day. Now, all you gotta do is go into the wilderness and find something interesting to shoot (zoos are lame).

Great stuff.
I'd tried one out recently also and was very impressed. It's a fine piece of engineering.
Look forward to seeing results with your copy.

Yeah, I rented this lens a while back for a week trip up to Acadia. Awesome lens. Makes me really want to buy one eventually. Or if I can find the FA* one eventually that wouldn't be bad either.
