Do I have LBA or have I simply lost my mind?

I think the title says it all.

So far, and I have posted this previously, I have controlled LBA by only buying older MF primes that were either faster / wider / longer than by every day kit that basically consists of
sigma APO 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC, SMC-FA J 18-35 F4-5.6, Tamron XR Di 28-75 F2.8, Sigma APO 70-200 F2.8 EX plus TCs.

In the process, I had picked up a SMC Tak 35 F2 and an M42 vivitar 28mm F2.5 both faster than my other lenses and focal lengths I did not have as primes.

In using these, and my one real digression into LBA, a Super Tak 85mm F1.9, I have found that using the M42 lenses has some advantages over K mounts with respect to having Av exposure mode.

Although I have a good selection of K or KA mount MF lenses (24F2.5, 28F2.5 aquired since I got the vivitar M42 , 50F1.4, 85F1.4, 105F2.8, 135F2.5 and 300F4) I am now thinking of putting a similar collection together in M42 mounts.

When you consider the K mounts are all fast or very fast, have I gone mad in wanting the same in M42?

Welcome to the madness I find that I have simply accepted it and am working towards getting a full selection of the focal lengths that I use in all the diffrent makes of lens as you can see from my signature. The only exceptions being the DA* line thats outside of my price range and the FA31 again a price thing

I keep telling myself there is a fine line between LBA/lost mind and common sense that seems too good to be true but isn't.

You're worse than I ever dreamed. Every focal length from every maker?

I would settle for the fastest (relitively) at each length from any one maker and I thought I was in trouble?

I can do what I can do

I use a Lowe Alpine slingshot bag. In that I carry:
  • K10D/D-BG2
  • Promaster 7500EDF flash
  • FA35/2 (mounted)
  • FA50/1.4
  • DA55/300
  • Tamron SP 35~80
  • Tamron SP 90/2.5
I can do anyting photographically I can do - and will ever be able able to do - with this kit, and this is very nice gear, not a compromise.

I have 5 more working cameras and 11 more lenses. Is that LBA, or part of the hobby? Only I can say.

It is LBA if I don't shoot film with those cameras and lenses every so often. The tell will be how many of them are sold by March 31st

To your question of course:

"When you consider the K mounts are all fast or very fast, have I gone mad in wanting the same in M42?"

Actually, I'm in the opposite boat. There are times I curse my baroque elaboration of lens encrustations on otherwise straightforward equipment; mainly when someone else is about to use the camera. I'd have to tutor them in the intriciacies of K adapted M42's, or find a damn K mount lens to stick in the maw of the camera.

So for me, the temptation has been to expand my K / KA mount pile of oblong optical devices.

Not until you go buy another camera body just for your M42's.

I have an *istD, K10D and K7D already in digital, plus PZ1, Ricoh XR2s and Kx in film, because I have always maintained the resale value of the bodies does not justify selling/trading them. Are you suggesting I get another body too????

There isn't much out there in bodies that I can't already do with what I have. I know I should have taken the Spotmatic ESII I saw with SMC Tak 50mm F1.4, but that is water under the bridge now.

If you are serious about going M42, you do need to get a M42 body, if only to get the better deal on some lens attached to it.

Plus, a M42 bod speaks sweet nothings to a M42 lens in native language

Yep. ESII and F are my favorite M42 film bodies; I use depending:

F = shutter priority

ESII = aperture-priority
