FWIW, I have an FA*200/4 macro.
It is, by a significant margin, the sharpest and best overall lens I have used.
However, it is truly only great as a macro lens. I found the bokeh to be a bit harsh (double edge) if it is used outside of the macro range.
OTOH, as a macro lens, it is flawless.
For all that, I'd have to really want it for that price, though I was prepared to pay about 1K less than that for mine.
When I bought it, it was still listed on the Pentax Canada website, and in the price book for just under Can$3K.
Pentax Canada couldn't supply one, but they found one in a rep's kit in the USA, had it shipped to Canada where they refurbished it and sold it to me for Can$1300.00
I consider it a steal at that price.
I put the money I saved towards most of an A* 600/5.6.
That was a good summer to be me.

Oh yes, the FA* 200 is fine, but definitely not worth as much as they're asking for.
May as well go for a DA* 200 for a fraction of that price...
Sorry, but I'm afraid you don't know what you're talking about? The FA* 200mm f/4 Macro is one of the rarest and best performing Pentax lenses ever made. It is outstanding in it's primary role as a macro lens and as a tele.
It is so hard to find one, especially since it wasn't made in large numbers and few people who own it would want to ever sell it. Very few have ever seen one in the flesh. It is certainly one of my dream lenses. Pentax should reissue one now. The DA* 200mm f/2.8 is a great tele but it ain't no macro lens. Just no comparison.

I hate to say this, but that's clearly a rip-off price. true it is a classic lens, but it's price is just not worth it especially if there is a modern version of that lens. if there was no DA*200/2.8, then that price would had been just fine.

There is no modern version of that lens. The DA* 200mm f2.8 is not a macro, especially 1:1. That said, the price probably is about a grand too high.

I wonder if it's sharper than my Series-1 200?
Anyways, I would of bought it if it was black, but I hate silver so...
There's a Series 1 200mm macro?

An FA* 200mm macro and an A* 600mm f5.6. I was lucky to have the A 400mm f5.6.

whoops, sorry, I thought it was an FA/2.8. anyway, it is still overpriced. also, have you tried putting a Raynox diopter lens on a DA*/2.8 ?

With a 77mm filter thread, I don't think Raynox would be viable. However, I may try the *C@non* 500d on the DA* 300mm f4 this summer.

guess the seller is trying to validate his sale of the item. probably having difficulty letting go of the lens for only 2k.

He's got a whole mess of Minolta glass as well as a Pentax A* 200mm macro, A* 85mm f1.4 on the block.

Always interesting to keep an eye on the offerings of Mr Ian Hobday.
Just browsing, of course

the problem with pentax is this in these days. price is going up everywhere for every kind of lens used or not. put the low quantity of used lenses.
once i can see a lot of fa* , now very few in a year.
interesting the minolta glass, especiallu telephoto, are flooding the ebay. there is a great choiche of old minolta glass from 300 to 600, and the price of the 400 4,5 is very good. i dont ever buy a sony cam in mi life but for sony user this is a good place to buy good glasses.
also the nikon and c anon used are top notch and very cheap compared to pentax.

IMO that's not going to sell for that price. I think the going rate is around $2K most of the time. Beautiful glass though.
This lens doesn't show up that often, I'd click on the BIN button if it's $2k only

But I just got a DFA100WR, probably don't need another macro lens ...
