And I'd check out the Raynox Club thread before writing off what a $40 closeup lens can do. Quality is pretty amazing for very little money and very little space in the bag - although to be sure, true macro lenses do have their advantages. If you're thinking of getitng a prime anyhow in a focal length were there happens to be a macro in your price range, that's surely the way to go. But if not, then a good quality cluseup lens - which run around $50 - is a fine way to go for now,

Also, a 55-300 with tubes would only give 1:1 at the short end, where working distance would be pretty small. A Raynox 150 will give 1:1 in the upper/middle part the range, which would be more generally useful.
