New Pentax user. Just got a K-x and need lens suggestions...

Hello everyone!

I've been using my new K-x the past 2 days and have been very impressed. I'm switching from Sony, and the Pentax seems to be a much more customizable, well put together camera... not to mention the lower price, video, better jpeg engine, and ISO performance. I do, however, need suggestions on lenses. I wanna keep it around $1000 for a walkabout (2.8 please), zoom, and portrait prime (atleast one of them needs to be macro). I've come up with a list of lenses (2 of which are sigma) and could use some input.

Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM
Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG OS
Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Lens

The reason why I went with the new OS Sigmas is because of the poor in-body SR compared to my Sony's SSS. I really enjoyed the extra couple stops.

So what do you think? Any other suggestions?

On a side note, does anyone think Pentax could improve their SR through a firmware update?

Thanks for your input!
-Nick

Your lens choices seem quite reasonable, however...

Take a look at Pentax 16-50 2.8 + Sigma 70 2.8 macro.

That maybe a bit over a grand, but it should hit a spot, IF you can get yourself a good copy for 16-50.

Also they already fixed some problems with SR in K-x via "Silent firmware update" or so they say. Check out the thread in news&rumors section.

If you need f/2.8 for your walkaround, the Sigma 17-70 is out then - it's only f/2.8 at the wide end. In the heart of it's range it's going to be closer to f/4 (although I don't know that the lens is actually out yet, so I'm not sure where it might go to f/4).

Also, none of these are macro lenses (although I'll bet the zooms call themselves that), and the 50 is pretty short for portraits. If you want to fix both of these at once, the Sigma 70mm Macro is the obvious choice.

I'd be highly surprised if Sigma's OS really does any better in the 17-70 range than Pentax's SR, which is also worth a couple of stops there. At the lnger end, the lens OS might indeed be more effective. But I really wonder if it's worth giving up so much optical quality compared to the DA55-300 over a difference in whatever difference there might be in stabilization effectiveness.

Not sure what problems you're having with it. Seems to work just fine for most people; perhaps you had a defective unit, or were shooting too fast for it to keep up? A couple of people have reported issues in certain cases with the K-x, although those mostly appear to be cases where they just aren't accounting for mirror slap as well as they should in setting their expectations.

Tamron 17-50mm 2.8

Personally I would not get the Sigma 17-70mm OS, I would go for a fast 2.8 instead, as I think the extra versatility outweighs any potential gain in improved SR.

With a 2.8 lens you gain a guaranteed 1.5 stops.

Another thing to remember, you don't need to cover every single mm of focal length. The old rule from when people used to shoot alot of primes is you need to double the focal length to get a significant difference in the shot you can get.

A lot of pros used to shoot 18-35mm, 50mm and 70-200mm (all in 35mm), so the equivalent APS-C would be the 12-24mm, a 35mm (or the 31mm limited), and the 50-135mm.

Personally I use my 12-24mm as my walkaround, and with my 50-200mm and my 50mm 1.4 in my pocket. I have the 17-70mm but I haven't used it since I got my 12-24mm.

Hmmm, the 12-24 seems nice for the wide end, but with f/4, it wouldn't be that great with low light indoor shooting. If anything, I'll save up and buy that later. Right now, I'm leaning more towards the Pentax 16-50, Sigma 18-50, or Tamron 17-50 (all 2.8). I've read that the 16-50 is not worth its price because of it's quality and performance.

f2.8 until 35mm would be nice... have to wait for the reviews though

After reading some reviews, the 55-300 seems to be the best choice as long as the SR can keep up (my sony was pretty dang good).

I'm still kind of lost with primes. I was using a 50 1.8 on my Sony and loved it. It was only $150, so looking at some of the hiked Pentax prices leaves me kinda dizzy.

...and what's good for macros? ugh...

The list is growing...

Oh, and I did the silent update. We shall see the results when I go play around tmrw.
