I agree that the 40 is not wide enough, so I'd go with the 70 for close-ups.

A wider lens, or a zoom, however, would be a lot more useful in my opinion. Last time I was in NYC I shot film with the K15mm and A 35-105mm, which equates to a 10mm and ~24-70mm on digital.

Out of those 2 options, I think the DA 40 is the better choice. It is an excellent walkabout lens. That said, my real vote would be for a zoom like the Tamron 28-75/2.8, which could be a one-lens solution, or something like the Tamron 17-50/2.8 plus the DA 70. Plenty of options, except I think the DA 70 by itself would be too limiting in NYC unless you were really focusing on just people shots with a little more distance (I live in the NYC suburbs and work in Manhattan).
