Well, there are so many different things to take pictures of in city scapes that both would get you tons of great pictures. I would say either the 70 for portrait/street shooting work, or the DA 15 as recommended above to get full shots of buildings.

What are you going to take pictures of?
If you want help from this forum you need to provide more particulars other than telling us you're going to take pictures in NY, NY.

If it were me, I'd take both. Leave the DA40 on the camera and bring the DA70 in my pocket.

But, just so you know, I have neither lens.
IF I were going to NY I'd be taking street shots - photos of people going about their daily routine in the city: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/mini-challenges-games-photo-stories/43981...-style%3D.html. For that I'd bring a wide angle, which for me would be my Sigma AF 24mm. I might bring the 18-55 kit lens also, 18mm @ f3.5 ain't bad. I'd also bring my Pentax-A 50/1.2 for some low light shot opportunities at night..
But that's me and that's how I take pictures.

Both

DA 40 for using indoors, but also outdoors when you want to shoot the whole street or a crowd waiting for the bus.

DA 70 for portraits or when you want to focus on details such as ornamentations on buildings etc.

Kind regards

If you are going to use just one lens, then bring the 40mm:

-Takes up no space.
-You can move pretty close to objects, and still get an image.
-Great angle of view for street photography.

Again, depends on what you want to shoot. I'd choose DA 70 myself, because I find the 40-50mm FOV very limiting for a one-lens solution, so I might as well limit myself to a lens with a specific purpose.

I asssume you're using a crop camera. Though my answer would be the same in any case: if it was a choice of just one between the two the 40 would be much more useful. An even wider lens would be beneficial, but the 40 is good.

I often go with just the 43. The 70 is a bit too near-tele for me - but then your style of shooting and preference may be at the short-tele end of things,

Taking photos of people, the 40mm. If you are taking photos of architecture, buildings, etc then you need something quite a bit wider like the 12-24 or the DA 15 limited. They are all good lenses, but obviously quite different focal lengths.

How about DA 35 ltd? Although all the ones mentioned here are fine choices.

I agree with Nesster above, I think that if you have only one prime for NYC, the 40mm would be probably as good as any. I think you will want "wide" more than you will want "long". But then again I prefer wide so my bias might be getting in the way.
Actually the ideal solution would be to bring something like the Sigma 17-70, it's not a GREAT lens, but it does do quite well as a very good travel lens.

The 40 would be the best choice between the two. However, as a gereral rule the 40 is not wide enough, and the 70 not tele enough, for most types of photography there.

Just my two cents, I've been extremely happy using my 17-70, 210 mm, and fast 50 for night shots.
