SMC Takumar 50/1.4 vs. Auto-Takumar 55/1.8

Two very good lenses, but one was clearly a winner for me. See the fifth matchup in the first round of my Normal Lens Shootout here.

I get to eat a little crow because of this review, too. I often barely realize that my lenses have apertures smaller than f/5.6 - but in the shot below, I actually think that f/8 was the best aperture for the shot. So I take it back, there certainly are places where shooting smaller than f/5.6 is useful.

SMC Takumar 50/1.4 @ f/8, Pentax K10D, 1/8s, ISO 100

Thanks for looking!

Sean:

Thanks for the review - I am still relatively new to this site and digital photography in general - I have an old Pentax Spotmatic 35mm camera with an Auto-Takumar 1.8/55mm lens as well as a SMC Auto 3.5/135mm lens. I recently bought the necessary mount so that I could 'try' out these lens on my K100D - I have been very impressed with the results - although it was a bit strange going back to focusing. I was glad to read that you felt that the 1.8/55mm lens performed well - even though not as good at the 1.4/50mm.

I am still learning about lens and the impact they have on the end result... thanks for the info.

What are your opinions on the 3.5/153mm SCM lens?

Any information will be helpful...

You did it again Sean... !

He, I have the SMC Takumar 50/1.4 and I am not surprised. A bit boring on the outside, a very good fast 50 optically and even useable wide open.

The game goes on thanks to you.

regards,

Thanks for the encouragement, Jonas. I too really like the SMC Takumar 50/1.4, and fully expect it to win another round.

Believe it or not, I've never owned that lens. I had an SMC Pentax-M 135/3.5 at one time but it wasn't in great shape so I sold it. I know some others have the S-M-C Takumar 135/3.5 and like it quite a bit.
Of course, my advice is going to be to slap it on the camera and start shooting! It won't cost you a penny!

Thanks for looking everyone,
Sean

The encouragement is at place.

All the way to the final perhaps. Which it won't win, that's my guess. Now I am often wrong...

I'm loving the shootout Sean! I'm rooting for the 50/1.4 tak as well...mine's been in the family for 30 years and I use it on both my k10d and ESII
