I said I was new and ignorant to Pentax, not photography.
I've been shooting for 40+ years (yes my eyesight is still 20/20) so, I know when a lens is defective or exhibits front/back focusing! Geez.
If I didn't have the 2 lenses at the same time I would have been very impressed with the 55-300mm, sans the very slow AF.
The IQ was quite good but not as good as my 80-320mm.
Maybe you got a bad 80-320mm?
I am assuming you actually had one of each and compared yours with different results?
Frank
Please don't get defensive. I don't own the 80-320, and am considering the 55-300, so I'm interested on how it performs. I said that the general concensus was that the 55-300 was better, not that you were wrong. I used the word "maybe"

As others have pointed out, images would have helped. AF speed is a significant factor, indeed. As I also wrote, as long as you like your lens, all's well.

Wow!
Obviously I have offended the good ol' boys.
I offered my opinion based on my "highly subjective unscientific comparison".
Didn't even post it in the lens review forum and yet I get blasted.
Even accused of not knowing how to use a lens after 40 years of shooting.
Yea, I know it was not Pentax but come on Pentaxan "user error".
Give me a break.
Don't worry boys.
I got the message
I won't post again.

honestly, if there was someone got offended, it is obviously you.

nobody is blasting you here nor accused you of not knowing what you are doing. those are just some of the reasons that some users "DO ENCOUNTER" when they have a problem. it's not an accusation but could be one of the possible factors. you could find a lot of threads here regarding sharpness issues which can be contributed to user error.

again, the challenge here is to show images that can be compared which can help educate others as well.

and please learn how to comprehend words before getting mellow-dramatic. don't get mad just because the general concession is looking for something that can justify your findings. critical analysis is also substantial especially when a thread is entitled like the one you posted. otherwise, you have presented a half-empty/half-full glass, if you know what that means.

p.s. learn how to present your argument properly. getting mad and declaring 40 years experience won't earn you any merit. dont get personal, BE OBJECTIVE !

saw the signature of the OP is a k-x. he should probably look at that possible camera difference scenario as well. or look at some threads regarding k-x focus and sharpness issues. but I guess 40 years of experience would prove those k-x topics wrong as well.

Frank.
There really isn't any need for feeling attacked as from the posts here there was neither the intention nor the words used to convey such a notion.
So there's no message here not to post again. I'd just encourage you to accept that others may not share your view and that's OK.
