I always go for the software as I am more a design guy and have used graphic softwares extensively through my whole professional life (with graphics).
Softwares can do a lot if you know what you are doing.
Feature for feature, software wins out over the lens..as least for me.
Give me a decent lens and a good photo editing software and I can do most anything.
Even looking at photo magazines now, a lot of the winning photos use some kind of photo editing software and some even stack the images to win!

I got the 16-45 on Thursday. I'm impressed with the difference in performance over the kit lens. I find I'm using a LOT less post-processing with it. If I use the amount of sharpness I normally used with the kit lens it starts to look strange. And I find I don't feel that I have to mess with saturation and contrast. It's funny that the better lense seems to reduce my desire for more software.

And I'm a software developer!!!

Software or lens

I think Adobe will let you download Elements8 for a 1 month trial,so you can have
the best of both for a while.
