She dropped it!!

I got one of the new Kx kits for my wife for her birthday in November. This morning, while trying to change lens and walk at the same time she dropped the 55-300 zoom. It landed on the outer rim, and smashed the filter. It also cracked the 'barrel' or whatever you call it that extends outward when you zoom it. The glass is not cracked.

Putting it back on the camera, it works, in that everything connects up and the motor runs, but not right. It makes clunky noises.

Is this something that might be repairable?

Or is it more cost effective to just buy another, possibly better, lens instead of putting money into repairs.

Dang. this lens is only two months old...

Plastics inside might be broken.

Get a tamron or pentax 18-250 and she will not have the need to change lens anymore

Probably. We live in the Turks and Caicos Islands and round trip shipping for a lens back to Pentax US would probably be around $ 150 before we even started talking about repairs.

Are the Tamrons plastic, too?

As this will more than likely not be a warranty case, is there no local Pentax repair centre?

I doubt the warranty covers dropping the lens. At least no warranty I've ever seen covers damage that the user has inflicted, even by accident. Warranties are for manufacturing problems.

More than likely, you can find a replacement lens right here on this forum for a lot less money than it would cost you to ship and repair yours.

Unfortunately, Pentax does not furnish a hood with this lens when in the kit. A hood might not have saved the lens but it probably would have received the damage instead of the lens barrel. Or, not.

count 10 more months before you buy her a replacement gift for her birthday. you don't want to give her a replacement gift every month, do you?

seriously, just buy her a used copy and next time be extra careful when handling lenses.

Thanks.
I checked that site, and that looks to be a good enough lens for what she does with it. Mostly bang around on boats or the ocean taking blog photos.

It doesn't tell me if the tubes are plastic or not. Guess in this environment I really don't want anything that can corrode...anyhow..

So who's got the best price on the Tamron 18-250?

Most lenses that you can buy are made of plastic these days. So I wouldn't worry about that

use it until it stops working completely, then chuck it, and buy another one.

such is the hobby.

C'est la vie.
But the lens is worth having again - I'd opt for an exact replacement than to get the DA 18-250.
I'm sure your wife has learned her lesson.

Don't toss the lens!
If ever you get a second copy and she drops it again, maybe you can interchange parts to make a complete one!
