chrysanthemum? hehehe

you know some Leica M lenses do that, usually at the half stops if they have them and it's really annoying. The early Leica-M 35mm f/2 summicron is famous for it.

I would have never used that expression either, but it describes the outline of my 105 mm Vernon Edonar F2.8 preset, which at intermediate apertures, i.e. from about F5.6-11 forms a ring of "cusps" that are due to the reverse curvature of the blades

Time for a revival of this not quite lens club - this is taken with the Tele takumar 6.3/300 on a monopod at near minimum focusing distance - about 8 m. I love the bokeh thrown by this lens and its 12 aperture blades. Longitudinal CA visible on the sides of the twigs behind the blossom as discussed above.

Well, since this thread is revived, and I'm a listy sort of guy, I'll list my many-blade round-iris BOKEH MONSTER! glass. Sure, why not?

* Isco Westron 35/2.8, 13 iris blades
* Enna Sandmar and Meyer Primagon 35/4.5, 10 blades each
* Kilfitt Makro Kilar E 40/3.5 and Meyer Helioplan 40/4.5, 12 blades each
* CZJ Tessar 50/2.8 (1-ring preset), 12 iris blades
* Jupiter-9 85/2 (2-ring preset) and Meyer Trioplan 100/2.8, 15 blades each
* Enna Tele-Sandmar and Isco Westar 100/4.5, 10 blades each
* Opticam 135/2.8 (T2 mount, 2-ring preset), 10 iris blades
* Hanimar Preset (2-ring) and Enna Tele-Ennalyt 135/3.5, 13 blades each
* Steinheil Culminar 135/4.5, 16 iris blades
* Jupiter-11 135/4 (2-ring preset), 11 iris blades
* Meyer Telemegor 180/5.5, 15 iris blades
* Vivitar-Komine Tele 200/3.5, 18 iris blades
* Tele-Takumar 200/5.6 (2-ring preset) and Enna Tele-Ennalyt 240/4.5, 10 blades each
* Spiratone Telephoto 400/6.3 (T2, 2-ring preset), 13 iris blades

Of those 20 camera lenses, note that only 5 are Japanese: Opticam, Hanimar, Vivitar-Komine, Tele-Takumar, and Spiratone. The rest are Germanic (the Russians are Zeiss clones). Some of these (Meyer 40/4.5 pancake, CZJ 50/2.8, Enna 100/4.5) are so great and so tiny that they're always in my carry bag. Don't leave home without them!

Then I have 20 enlarger and MF lenses with 10-16 blades; I use these on bellows and/or tubes. All great fun. Of these, half are USA-made, half are Germanic, none are Japanese. Is there a reason so few overall (5 out of 40) are Japanese? Is this count just an artifact of my accumulation, or is Japanese optical engineering thriftier?

Time for another revival just to show off this image of 24 iris blades.
As the diameter of the lens where the blades are housed is about 70mm the 24 blades are needed just to fill the space - fully manual and no preset ring - the lens is the Novoflex Noflexar 600mm. German made. Imagine the size of the blade if only 5 had been used.

Beautiful! Reminds me of the 18-blade aperture of my Takumar 300/4. Are the blades actually exposed or do you have the lens partially disassembled?

Sorry Erik just noticed your response.

The lens comes apart at the middle for transport and storage exposing the blades - the front barrel can be swapped out for the 400mm group or 200 mm group - I only have the 600mm front barrel. System has a locking ring and bayonet. German build and precision.

Picture is here: Post #4154

Seems that 15 blades in tele-lentars/tele-tokina's are quite common. I have both 300mm and 200mm tele-lentars, both 15 blades of awesomeness ))

Impressive list. I'll add these as well:

tele-tokina 300mm f5.5 (rebranded tokyo koki tele-tokina 300/5.5) - 15 blades
tele-tokina 200mm f4 - 15 blades
CZJ Biotar 58/2 (from 1950s) - 12 blades
Mir 1V - 10 blades
