you know some Leica M lenses do that, usually at the half stops if they have them and it's really annoying. The early Leica-M 35mm f/2 summicron is famous for it.

I would have never used that expression either, but it describes the outline of my 105 mm Vernon Edonar F2.8 preset, which at intermediate apertures, i.e. from about F5.6-11 forms a ring of "cusps" that are due to the reverse curvature of the blades

Time for a revival of this not quite lens club - this is taken with the Tele takumar 6.3/300 on a monopod at near minimum focusing distance - about 8 m. I love the bokeh thrown by this lens and its 12 aperture blades. Longitudinal CA visible on the sides of the twigs behind the blossom as discussed above.

Is there a reason so few overall (5 out of 40) are Japanese? Is this count just an artifact of my accumulation, or is Japanese optical engineering thriftier?

As the diameter of the lens where the blades are housed is about 70mm the 24 blades are needed just to fill the space - fully manual and no preset ring - the lens is the Novoflex Noflexar 600mm. German made. Imagine the size of the blade if only 5 had been used.

Beautiful! Reminds me of the 18-blade aperture of my Takumar 300/4. Are the blades actually exposed or do you have the lens partially disassembled?

Sorry Erik just noticed your response.

The lens comes apart at the middle for transport and storage exposing the blades - the front barrel can be swapped out for the 400mm group or 200 mm group - I only have the 600mm front barrel. System has a locking ring and bayonet. German build and precision.
