16-45mm or 17-70mm

Is the 17-70 a step up in IQ over the 16-45? Or is it more just a sideways step? I want to up grade the kit lens but wonder if its worth the extra 200 dollars for the 17-70. I do like landscapes shots but then that 70mm end sounds good also. Thanks

17-70 has less chromatic aberration, but 16-45 has less barrel distortion at the wide end. Otherwise, it would be difficult to distinguish images taken by both in their overlapping 17-45 range. 17-70 has a rubber gasket around the mount, but it's not classified as WR. Also, SDM motors do fail (mine did, but was replaced within a week). The AF speed is almost exactly the same on both, but 16-45 is very loud (but this doesn't have to be an issue).

It may depend on whether or not you plan on getting a DA 70mm or FA 77mm ltd later or not. If not, I think it would be worth it.

Third option: Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

Razor sharp from wide open, and wide open is a lot wider than with either of the Pentax lenses (and it doesn't have the SDM failure problems of the DA* 16-50mm f/2.8).

So Bones do you think the Tamron is as good in the IQ department as the other 2? Thanks for your opinion. And I am not even thinking about the 16-50 due to the SDM issue.

I've owned the 16-45, but not the 17-70 (though I did own the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5).

I think the Tamron has the best IQ of the ones I've used, and the constant f/2.8 is great for shallow depth of field shooting and indoor/low-light shooting.

You can check out the "Tammy Club" thread here for a lot of examples. Some of mine are here: Football 12-6-09 - deadwolfbones' Photos

I have the Pentax 17-70 and I'm very satisfied with it, this lens is on my cam 95% of the time. Most of the time I shoot indoors, so I use it almost always wide open and I like its IQ. I mainly use 28-40mm and 60-70mm FL, this is a great lens to cover those without changing lenses.

I don't have 16-45, but I1ve heard it's a great lens, too.

Another vote for the Tamron 17-50. I was comparing several lenses when I made my choice for the 17-50, including the 16-45 and the 16-50*. The 17-50 was just simply a brilliant lens and for a very attractive price...not to mention faster than the 16-45. Its a winner, for sure.
