I have:

DA 15mm
Zenitar 16mm
DA 21mm
FA 31mm
DA 35mm
DA 40mm
FA 50mm
A 50mm
Voigtländer 58mm
DA 70mm
FA 77mm
Voigtländer 125mm
DA* 200mm
DA* 300mm

A 500 or 600mm prime might be nice, but I don't see it happening for a while. Using the old doubling/halving rule would give me useable kits of

DA 15 + FA 31 + DA70 or

DA 21 + DA 40 + FA77

I'd like to know what's the most number of lenses other people use at one time. I've got a bagful of lenses, but seldom shoot with more than two or three at a time.

I was quite happy with the 21, but there were some very rare occasions where I would have liked something wider, and didn't take the sigma 10-20 which is one fat lens. However, I've only had the 15 for a couple of days only and haven't done any real shooting with it, so I can't really help you much, but, I can tell you that 21 was fine when I had no other choice.

To me there is a huge difference between the 21 and 24. I think the only focal length I really 'see' is 24mm, so I love that focal length. The 21 at time surprises me with what it shows....I like the 24mm perspective very, very much.
Thanks,

with the 24mm, I know what you mean. I love the FOV too. Despite many moaning it's "weird" on APS-C. I had Sigma 24/2.8 AF but sold it and shortly afterwards got K24/2.8. Wouldn't mind the FA* you have, but I'm happy with mine (although I'd swap it for A version anytime). I think the FOV is just gorgeous on APS-C. As you (again) I have Sigma 10-20 but I tend to use it as 10/4 prime, and for this it's really big, so it stays on the shelf more and more. Since my budget is not limitless (considering starting family ) I'm leaning towards FA20/2.8. I'm just not sure if the difference between 20 and 24 will be enough. I made stupid thing month ago when I let K18/3.5 slip through my fingers
Oh well....
I'll see

A 36mm equivalent is a classic FOV, I don't see why anyone would think it weird. My old Minolta Hi-Matic G had a fixed 35mm 2.8 lens. That's all I used for fourteen years. My first digital compacts were 36mm at their widest fov, so I've used the FL a lot. I've often been tempted by the FA*24mm, but it seems to have rather poor edge performance, and the price is a bit of pinch for an older used lens.

I have to defend the FA*24... the copy I had was *sharp*, had beatiful colours and a decent boké... I might have had the *perfect* FA*24... but in my book it was GREAT!
The build quality was also fabulous..

At f2.0 it might have had poor borders, i do not know, never looked. Center sharpness was just great! ...what lens have perfect corners wide open? Taken down to 4 or 5.6 it was very very very sharp, across the frame.

On the other hand, a lot of people have given the DA*50-135 high marks... I tried to love it but.. it had a great sharpness, but I could not stand the boké sometimes on medium distances...

That said, I might have a different taste then other people, but in my book..do not underestimate the FA*24....!

Kind regards

I've been trying to build the perfect prime collection for several months now and I've encountered a few head scratchers on issues of what focal ranges to go with. So I wanted to ask if anyone else would care to share their ideal prime collections to help shed light on matters.
There's lenses I have, lenses I use and lenses I want. I would like to have this:
15/4, 24/2.8, 35/2, 55/1.4, 77/1.8, 105/2.8, 135/2.5.
If I liked the idea of the DA 40/2.8 better, I would borrow this progression from Marc Sabatella:
15, 28, 40, 70, 100, 135
Maybe instead of the DA40, the Voightlander 40/2?

And of course some of these(ie. 28 and 58mm's) come with what we'd call a ridiculous amount of copies. But they all seem to have something special about them and so... what does one do in such cases?
That is one of the advantages of the second series. I could skip right from 40 to 70 and just ignore a dozen lenses I own or would like to try.

It is probably one of those questions that looks tough when you're sketching out a plan on paper, yet is simpler when you actually take pictures.

My ideal lineup with lenses I already own depends on the type of photography:

Cities/people:

DA 14mm
DA 21mm
FA 50mm (maybe switch to the DA 40mm)
DA 70mm
maybe K135mm

Nature/landscapes:

DA 14mm
DA 21mm
FA 50mm with the DA 70mm hood
Tamron 90mm macro
M 200mm f4

When I don't want to bring a bag:
DA 21mm on camera and hoodless DA 70mm in pocket.

Ideal vs. Shooting my dream

My ideal list, for what I want to do, is:
  1. A Tak
  2. Some K's
  3. An M
  4. A Tamron Adaptall-2
  5. An A
  6. An FA or two
  7. A DA*
to cover super-wide to super-tele.

I've spent enough money over the years buying and seliing, trying to put the right list together, that I could have had my dream list:

FA31, FA43, FA77

and a K-7.

Ideal line up is DA 15, DA 35 and DA 70. I have the 15 and 35 and the 50-135 is currently filling my needs for DA 70.

Not very sharp until f/5.6 and not sharp across the frame even at F8, according to Photozone.

OTOH I know it has great contrast, and contrast seems to be more highly valued than pure MTF.
