DA 15mm
F 28mm
FA 35mm (im not entirely sold on the FA 31mm, especially for the price)
DA 40mm
A 50mm F/1.2
FA 77mm
FA 135mm
sigma 150mm macro
DA* 200mm
DA* 300mm

and the pentax 1.7x teleconverter

I would much rather shoot the above and shoot with zero zooms .

Funny thing is, I dont own one of the lenses above :ugh::ugh:

So I wanted to ask if anyone else would care to share their ideal prime collections to help shed light on matters.
I have

Zenitar FE 16 (but rarely use it now)
DA15 (great and more practical for me than the rather older 12-24 for which I traded it)
DA21
DA40
K50 1.2 and M50 1.7
K105 2.8 and M100 2.8
FA135 2.8 and M135 3.5
M200

There's a great hole around the 70ish area - but when travelling, it's not so easy to shift your position with reference to more distant objects, so for me a zoom from 50 upwards is more useful than a zoom at shorter FLs. So I haven't been able to justify the high cost of a DA70, say.

All the above except for the DA21 were bought secondhand. There may be better 200s around for example, but I am not prepared to pay the price in money, size and weight. There isn't a single one of these that doesn't deliver what I need although that doesn't stop me looking lustfully at postings on the marketplace ..

Should I sell one of those 100/105s and 135s? Can't bring myself to do it ..

I don't know about ideal, but...

18mm: SMC K f3.5

28mm: Super Takumar f3.5, Pentax-M f2.8, Quantaray (Sigma) 28mm f2.8

35mm (Keeping both): Super Takumar f3.5 and FA 35mm f2

50mm: Super Takumar f1.4, Pentax-M f1.7, Pentacon f1.8, SMC MACRO f4

55mm: Super Takumar f2, Sears (Tomioka) f1.4

85mm: SMC K 85mm f1.8

100mm: Pentax-M f2.8, Takumar f3.5 (rare 1957 preset)

135mm: Super Takumar f3.5, Pentax-M f3.5

*OT: I've decided to get an ultrawide zoom for my K200D, so will soon be selling my SMC K 18mm f3.5 to help finance, so 28mm will be as wide as I can go on my film cameras after that.

The lenses I already have are in bold.

Of course it would have been nice to have the FA 31mm F1.8 Ltd or A* 135mm F1.8 but they cost more than I am willing to pay. It's not that they are not worth it..... but I have a limit for how much money I want to spend on my hobby.

K 28mm F3.5 or K 30mm F2.8
DA 40mm F2.8 Ltd
DA 70mm F2.4 Ltd or M 85mm F2.0

K 135mm F2.5 (this lens will be mine very soon)
K 200mm F2.5
M 300mm F4.0

Kind regards
.lars

When I was still shooting film, FA*24, FA43 & FA77 were ideal for my need. I could fit more lenses into my bag but usually ended up less practical. I haven't quite found my ideal combo with APS-C though.
My actual combo for APS-C is, curiously, the same:
Vivitar 24/2
FA 43/1.9
FA 77/1.8

A nice small kit.

To be more practical, however, I usually go with:
DA 12-24/4
FA 43/1.9
FA 77/1.8

The four lenses mentioned would be the last ones I'd ever sell.

I've been working just recently on a list like this for myself so that I can stop buying random lenses and actually get to a point where I don't need to constantly be on the lookout for something I might like. Although, I will admit, that it was a good strategy while I was starting out because I had never experienced all the different series of lenses at that time. So over the past couple of years I have been able to use Takumar, K, M, A, F, FA (incl. Ltds), and DA lenses which has helped me understand the qualities, advantages, and disadvantages of each.

Now, I am finally getting closer to understanding what I really want to have available for use. I've come to the conclusion that although AF is really useful in a lot of situations, I still want to keep MF solutions around for those times when I really want to have an enjoyable tactile experience.

My dream kits are pretty close to filled out, with the lenses I currently own in bold. I have created 3 distinct sets of primes because I can't bring myself to thinking about giving up the Takumars or some of the SMC Pentax primes . If it really came down to push and shove I would probably consolidate into a mostly AF kit with a few of the MF SMC Pentax gems thrown in. The only thing that I don't like about my lists is that there is a lot of overlap in Takumar and SMC Pentax kits (50mm, 85mm, 135mm...), so I feel that some of those primes will be underutilized. It may come down to having to let go of my M42 primes in the future if I never use them. But to me, they are like the Ltds of the past.

Auto focus Kit for easy of use (keeping it mostly future proofed with FF lenses)
--------------------------------
DA 15mm F4 Ltd
FA 20mm F2.8 (maybe to be replaced by DA 21mm F3.2 Ltd for size/weight)
FA 31 F1.8 Ltd or wishful DA* 28mm F2 (F 28mm F2.8 is doing fine for now)
FA 43mm F1.9 Ltd
FA 77mm F1.8 Ltd
D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR (F 100mm F2.8 Macro holding steady now, but is big and heavy)
F 135mm F2.8
F* 300mm F4.5 (I need a tripod mount if anyone has an extra...)
F 1.7x Adapter

Out of these if I needed to travel light, I would go with 20mm, 43mm, 77mm, and probably an 'A' extension tube (2x TC w/ glass removed) to handle any necessary close-ups I run into.

SMC Pentax(-K,-M,-A) (For using manual focus lenses along with open aperture focusing and some metering (with the A lenses))
--------------------------------
Undecided WA (M 20mm F4 or A16mm F2.8 FE or K 18mm F3.5)
A 28mm F2 (currently my A 24mm F2.8 holds this place)
A 50mm F1.2
K 85mm F1.8
K 135mm F2.5

K 200mm F2.5

Complete: SMC Takumars (For the ultimate in manual focus feel, giving up some modern conveniences and WA aperture speed)
--------------------------------
20mm F4.5
28mm F3.5
35mm F2
50mm F1.4
50mm F4 Macro (original Macro-Takumar, 1:1 max reproduction ratio)
85mm F1.8
135mm F2.5

The last three years I have owned:

DA15
DA21
FA31
DA35
DA40
FA43
DA55
DA70
FA77
F135
FA135
A200
M200

Perfect for me (street, backpacking in Scotland, flowers in my garden) is this line-up:

DA15: Just perfect for traveling, Compact and well-built, low distortion and good flare control, Sharpness, Min. Focus 18cm. Built in hood.

DA35: Small, well built and soooo sharp! This is a true "desert island" lens! I call it "FA31-Killer"! Built in hood.

FA77: Excellent sharpness, bokeh and colour rendition, 3D effect. Built in hood. Portrait, portrait, portrait. And of course portrait. Oh, did I mention portrait?

F135: IQ, build, best focus speed of Pentax world, lightweight: 395 g!! Built in hood.

For future a DA*300 would be a great adition to these band of four.

My current collection looks as such:

15mm
28mm
35mm
50mm
58mm
85mm
100mm
135mm
Starting from these lenses you listed, I'd sell the 50 or the 58 (the one that's worse) and the 100, and eventually buy a 24mm.

I currently have
M 20/4
FA 35/2
F 50/1.7
K 135/2.5

which I think is a fine setup. Maybe I'll replace the 50/1.7 with something a little longer someday, like the DA 70 oder the DA* 55/1.4, and I'd love AF on th 135, but that's all.

Eventually some would like to add the DA 14/2.8 - I don't, I have a Sigma 10-20, which is fine for me.

My ideal prime kit, based on what I want to accomplish these days is a non-existant DA 11mm f/5.6 limited, a DA 15mm f/4.0 limited (working on that one) and my always present companion, the FA 43mm limited. For good measure, I may look to the DA 21mm limited as well, but the 15mm comes first

That sounds like a dream lens to me! Especially if it were a pancake... if not, then it should be faster

If that imaginary 11/5.6 be not larger than the 15/4, I would definitely buy it and get rid of my Sigma 10-20. That would be one HOT lens....

I still stand in a line between the DA 40mm f2.8 (which I currently have) and DA 35mm. My humble lens collection is just: 16-45mm, 50-135mm and 40mm. I am not sure I do need the 35mm instead of the 40mm or not!

I have the 3 amigos and just love them and also love the FA50

Thanks to Jsherman the DA15 is on my hit list, I have got by using my DA* 16-50's wide end but I am committing myself to using primes far more than I do now.

so my ideal is

DA 15
FA 31
FA 43
FA 50
FA 77

I really like my current "lightweight" kit: DA21, FA35, FA77.

I also own an F50/1.7, but I seldom use/carry it. And the Vivitar S1 105/2.5 is not really part of my regular kit.

Ideally, I would add the DA15 to those 4. But realistically I would have to let my DA12-24 go, and I'm not prepared to do that.

Naturally, I wouldn't mind replacing the FA35 by a DA30/2 WR
