Love that DA 40/2.8 but...

What's with the lens cap? Is there a snap on lens cap for the 40 DA similar to my 21 and 70 DA's?

step-up ring

I removed the screw-in lens hood and put on a 49-52mm step-up ring. Now I can use the same filters and lens caps that I use on the DA 18-55 and DA 50-200.

You can use a Fuji film can lid. It snaps perfectly into the 40 hood. Also one of the Pentax 110 lens caps is the same size. You may have to buy a 110 to get the cap ( mine aren't for sale).
thanks

I use a newer style Pentax 49mm cap, like the one that the FA 50mm f/1.4 uses.

That would be the Cap F 49mm.

Thanks people. I'll try the Fuji film cap.

Will this mount with the hood on? that could be a nice solution.

Oh, no it won't. I just don't use the hood when I need to quickly cap or uncap the lens. So, you're looking for a very tiny lens cap, huh?

The Pentax 110 lens cap will fit the hood. In the 40 2.8 IB it will tell the size lens cap to fit the front of the lens hood. Pentax made many different small caps for the 110 lenses. Other companies make small lens caps for video cameras etc. That said I like the Fuji film lid best. If you buy a roll of velvia you can get a black film lid. So sexy. The 40 pancake is a beautiful lens. Enjoy.
thanks

The seller that I bought my DA40 from included a Pentax 110 Skylight filter, that screws onto the back of the lens hood. With this on I don't worry about the lens hood, unless the lens is going back into the bag. The filter is a 30.5mm, so the lens cap you need should be the same size.
Having said that, I'll be checking the local used camera shop for 110 lens caps!
Oh ya, and the Fuji film canister lid will not fit with filter on the back of the hood. I hven't tried with a 49mm filter on between the lens and the hood.

Cool. Thanks for that info silverbullet. It looks like there are plenty of 30.5mm lens caps selling on eBay so I think I'll pick one up.

A slight change in the direction of this topic. Does anyone know if a 49mm filter can be used on the front of the lens, and the lens hood still used? Is there a issue with vignetting with this combination?

Thanks,
Chris
