Worth of a SMC-M 20 mm f4?

I'm currently using the Sigma 17-70 (and the WR kit lens) to cover the wide end. I've been contemplating buying a DA21 for some time, but never have.

Now I have the possibility to get a M20 f4, along with a M28 f2.8, a broken ME body, some filters and accessories. The price is around 325$ CND. I'm really not sure I want to get an M lens for almost the price of a used DA21, but I was wondering if the lens was worth it. The 28 would be nice, but would probably not get much use.

Opinions? Would the lens resell well if I find out I don't use it enough?

Your seller is clearly using the Lens Review DB to determine the value. The problem is, he isn't looking beyond the "average price". If you look beyond that, you'll see that only 3 of the 10 reviewers posted the price they paid. Of those three, the extremes: 1 bought a fungus-infested lens for $65, another paid $400 in Nov. of last year. Clearly it isn't offered very often.

I would say that the MINIMUM those lenses are worth is $325 and assuming they are in good shape (optically, mechanically, appearance-wise) there is virtually no way you can lose in buying them. If you decide not to pull the trigger, PM me and I'll be happy to buy them. Marketplace average prices are mostly significantly lower than today's Real Prices, in my experience.

I'd offer him $300 for everything, something he probably also expected when setting the price at $325.

I've been looking for one of those too, and $300 to $350 is what I've been able to gather looking everywhere. There are a few on ebay for $450+ that never sell too.

It's a good lens, but it seems a little expensive at that price tag.

I bought mine from a forum user last year for around 200$ i think, 300$ seems a bit steep to me.

Nonetheless it's a great little lens, I recommend it.

I own the M 20 f/4 - it's my second favorite MF lens after the M 85 f2.

I think it's probably sharper than my 15mm Limited, and it's smaller. It got some
so-so reviews back in the film days because of 'weak corners', but on aps-c,
those corners are gone, and it's just a brililantly sharp, contrasty lens. I love to
walk around with it set on hyperfocal and just snap.

You'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth that to you, but I have to say that
there was a period of a couple months this summer where I thought my M 20 f4
had been stolen, and I was serious about pulling the trigger on a $300
replacement from ebay. I held off, and a couple weeks later my lens turned up in
an old hoodie pocket

If you offer $300 CDN for the kit, then sell the M 28 for $50, you'll end up with the
M 20 f/4 for $250 CDN (about $235 USD.) I'd consider that a very fair price for
such an exceptional lens that's just getting rarer.

By the way, I did a little research on the original price when I though mine was
stolen... I was pointed at Lindy Stone at, who has a 1978 dealer

Turns out the M 20 f/4 was $498 USD initial retail back in 1978, which means
$1566 in 2007 dollars. $298 wholesale, which is $937 2007.

Makes that $235 seem like a bargain, no?

Here's a sharpness example close-up:

the recommended price should be around $200. if it costs around 300 or more, I think you shoud consider buying a used DA21 instead.

325 CND doesn't sound bad to me when tranlated to EUR. However prices tend to be a bit lower across the pond (at your side ).

The M 20/4 is a great lens. I was looking for months until I found one for a reasonable price. I think if I was still looking for one, I'd pay any price which is less than half the price of a new DA 21 .
