300 mm lens help

My budget for the new K-x is 750 bucks, but I really want a 300 mm lens for the extra reach. If the 2 lens kit drops below that or right around that price again, I'll get the kit. However, I can get the one lens kit for 545, leaving 200 bucks. Please give me some lens suggestions, be it Pentax, Sigma or Tamron, for the best 300 mm lens I can get around that price range, 200 to 250. Clearly going for bang for the buck rather than the best lens available. And, again, I may end up getting the 2 lens kit, but it's sitting up there at 850 now. Wish I had been camera hunting when there was the 200 rebate going on. Oh, well.

The 55/300 K-x kit is $749.99 at newegg.com ... the MSRP is listed but the price drops when you add it to the cart. At least, thats where it was yesterday.

Inventories are most likely depleted right now from after-xmas buying and filling back orders. Give it a month or two and I'm sure the $650 two lens kit price will be back.

I think, given your budget ($200-250), you might consider looking at an older manual focus lens such as the SMC Pentax K 300/4. Depending on conditiion these can be found for under $300 at B&H and KEH. The lens review area pretty much covers the pros and cons of this lens.

Personally, I think it is good value for the money if you don't mind a manual focus lens.

I find SpecialK's "review" hilarious. Now, MF lenses front-focus? HINT: His focusing screen was the wrong distance from the mirror.
