Good macrolens? Pentax DFA 100mm f2.8 WR or else?

Hi everyone,

I am shopping around to find a good macro lens for my K-7 to fix the lacking of "macro ability" of my lens collection :16-45, 50-135 and 40mm ltd

My friends suggested me buy the new release 100mm f2.8 WR, but it is impossible to buy from any online retailer and its price is still not clear for comparison.

Can someone advice me another good lens for this purpose? Many thanks

There are lots of great macro lenses out there - in fact, I think you'll find that almost all on the market have their admirers for a good reason.

I personally have the Pentax D-FA 100mm Macro which you can find out more about here: Pentax Lens Review and Specification Database - 100mm F2.8 Macro

and the DA 35mm Macro: Pentax Lens Review and Specification Database - 35mm F2.8 Limited Macro

The 35mm is sharper overall (at least over my version of the D-FA 100mm), but the focal length makes it a little unwieldy to use for the types of shots I like, so I find myself using the D-FA 100mm slightly more often for macro work.

It really is a fun world out there in macro land!

If you're willing to forego autofocus, you could consider a Kiron/Vivitar 105mm f2.8. They can be found for comparatively cheaply.

However, as soon as I get the cash, I'm getting the D-FA 100.

AF is non essential for macro work and so is WR (IMO). You could save some money by shopping around for the older version. There is also the Sigma 105 and the Tamron 90 which are a lot cheaper.
All macros tend to be good.

If you are ok with ebay then you can get it for $600. I've bought from prodigital2000, and they are very reputable. (With Bing cashback it is ~$550)

NEW PENTAX D FA MACRO 100MM F2.8 WR f/K-7 K-x w/8YR WTY - eBay (item 130362943134 end time Feb-28-10 17:59:39 PST)

I bought the Tamron 90mm, when I did that this was $800 though......

Greatly thanks to pcarfam. I just placed my order from prodigital200, but forgot to use Bing cash back.

I now can fix the lacking of "macro ability" of current set up. I have to return the DA40mm in order to buy the DFA 100mm. I may sell my 16-45mm later to afford a prime ltd lens, but I still need the 16-45 for landscape shooting purpose ...

Forgive me for saying so but you've laid down quite a bit of money for someone who's confused.

I acknowledge that I might spend too much on the lenses ... but I still need to enhance the flexibility of my lenses . I greatly appreciate your help and answers for my dumb question so far

Congrats on the new lens, I'm sure you'd love it.

Between the earlier DFA100 and the current WR one, I'd choose the WR version even it's $200 more. The better built quality, enhanced MF feeling and WR made the lens worthy of the extra cost imo.

Now you have ordered a macro lens you are going to need a tripod. More expense

You've got yourself a good set of lenses, now all we need is for you to show us some pictures.
