Someone should make a comparison against it and the Nokton @1.4

I have a ton of fast 50's and all of them are good. The best from my collection? Hard to say:
  • Pentax-K 55/1.8 Sharpest and best around with great build
  • KMZ Helios 44M 58/2 About as sharp as the K 55 with killer bokeh and "sturdy" FSU build
Great in their own way:
  • Pentax-M 50/1.7 Sharp and compact, great build
  • Auto-Rikenon 50/1.8 (M42) Smooth (not soft) rendering, great build
The above four are my "go to" normal lenses, each with its own strengths

Agree.
Someone who has Nokton 58/1.4, FA50/1.4, A50/1.2, SMC TAK 1.4, and other 50's should do a shootout.

I have the A50/1.2 and FA50/1.4 and could do a simple comparison but don't have the Nokton.

Along with IQ, sharpness and the like the ruggedness of the lens also plays quite a bit in my buying decision as it will be my go-to lens 90% of the time.

As of now I still think the DA* 55 might be the best bet. I think I'd feel almost guilty if I took a Limited lens to half the places this one will end up.

If the 50mm was your favorite in the film days,
I suppose the 35mm would be ideal now.
The FA35/2.0AL is sharp w.o. and producing contrasty pics even in low light situations.
It would make a perfect team with the Nokton 58/1.4 b.t.w......

IMO, Nokton 58/1.4 is in a different league to the FA35/2. FA35 is sharp, but IMO can't compete with the Nokton for rendering. The FA 31/1.8 LIMITED would be an awesome alternative.

But, these are all very different focal lengths, so I think the OP has to really decide on which focal length will work for his needs ?, is it 50 or 35?

As I said in the original post I am looking for a 50-55mm. Yes, I know it'll be a different field of view on a APS-C camera, but I like the extra "reach".

I'm already pretty much sold on the DA* 55, however I was trying to make sure I wasn't mistaken in my assumption that it's the most rugged, highest IQ, and sharp "fast 50". From what I've read that's the case though people bag on it for price alone, which I've taken out of the equation.

I hope that clarifies the advice I was seeking.
