Best 300(ish)mm zoom lens?

What I'm really looking for, is a lens to do wildlife photography while backpacking w/o breaking my back. So something with some decent reach as I'm not satisfied with my DA L 50-200mm, in reach or I/Q. This would be my secondary lens (primary being the DA 17-70) that I would use specifically for wildlife so I'll be above 200mm most of the time. The DA* series is above my price range and too big. It looks like the DA 55-300mm ED is my best bet as its not too massive of a lens and isn't too expensive.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Anything that goes above 300mm without breaking the bank? If not, is there anything with better I/Q then the 55-300mm? The sigma 70-300mm's don't seem to have the best reviews...

Any input is welcome!

What I have done, and I hike a lot, is to go with a manual focus SP Tamron 60-300 Adaptall lens. It performs very close to its 300mm prime cousin. This is no cheapo made lens--I believe, when it came out, it went for well over a thousand dollars--perhaps as close to 2 thousand. You can pick them up for under a $100. The IQ is very, very nice. Look in the Tamron Adaptall Club thread for samples. Also, Manual Focus forums has some excellent threads on this little gem. Of course, all this hinges upon you being willing to manually focus.

m42 adapter

Hi and Apologies (probably in the wrong place!)

But this forum is 'live'.

I have just been given a number of old M42 threaded lenses that were once used on an old Praktica MTL 50. I have a new K200D and was wondering where the best buy / product adapter would be for me?

Regards

Rob
