Perfect - Thanks all. That's exactly what I was looking for. Not the definitive, "right" answer - but rather different opinions/options. Since Gary brought up the issue of a tripod it makes me wonder. I have a Bogen tripod that I bought probably 15 - 20 years ago, and it might be a little heavy for traveling (I've only brought it with me when traveling by car - never on a plane). If I were to maybe get a lighter model for traveling, how do you bring a tripod along?

I assume I'd get a "tripod bag" for both packing it on the plane, and to have a strap to haul it around once there - but do you usually trat them as carry-on, or does it have to be packed away as another $25 piece of checked luggage?

Thanks again for all the help so far......

Tim

I hadn't considered the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 until Jewelltrail just suggested it, so if anyone has any more impressions or experiences on how that stacks up against the other's I'm considering feel free to chime in.....

Thanks,

Tim

At 14mm, the Sigma lens is f/5.

Hi Tim:

Have you visited our Sigma 10-20mm Club yet? It is full of shots with the Sigma UWA lens--that would help you a lot I think. Best of luck!

Which is plenty good enough, since he will be landscaping the Grand Canyon, not shooting sports with it.

BTW, @ 10mm & 11mm, the Pentax is non-existent, in rectilinear form.

I just hope I won't see yet another ND filter waterfall shot. j/k

Tim, you need to check tripods I believe. Depending on what luggage you have, you should be able to find one that folds up small enough to fit in a suitcase (or large duffel).

If I were to choose a wider lens than the kit lens, I'd choose something at 14mm or wider. Something like 16mm gives just 12.5 % wider and higher image than 18mm.

I own the Sigma 10-20 4-5.6 which I like a lot. It gives great colors and 10mm is really ultra wide :-)
