I have a k10 w/kit lens. If I buy a Kr should I buy just the body or get the newer 18-55 kit lens?

I just did a quick comparison between three 18-55's on my new (to me) K100D.

- DA I, looks like it's had a few knocks
- DA I, used but in good condition
- DA-L, looks like it's never been used

The two DA's gave identical results and when compared to the DA-L had less CA at the wide end and were slightly sharper at the long end.

I had bought the supposedly improved DA-L with the intention of keeping that one instead of the DA that came with my K100D, but I will be keeping the DA instead.

Could be that the DA-L is just a bad sample of course..

I am in the market for the 18-55mm WR lens, also. I saw an Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 WR on ebay for $94/shipped, said it was in a "white OEM box", with hood and both caps? Anybody think this is shady? The seller has over 180 reviews no negatives. I'm tempted since it would qualify for a squaretrade warranty.

The price is believable, but the "white" is not. AFAIK, the color options were available with the DA L versions with the K-x kits and now the K-r.

Sorry, might not have been clear. I did not mean a white lens just that it comes packaged in a white oem box.

My DAL 18-55, which came in my K-x Kit, was packaged inside the kit box in a nondescript tan box. I do not think DALs are sold separately and so I do not believe they come with a standard Pentax box per se.

Which lenses for the K5

Any help gratefully received I am intending to purchase the K5 and the two kit lenses as it seems a no brainer to buy them all together given the difference without them is negligible.

What are the kit lenses like? are they good enough to use for paid for work ie portraits weddings etc. Or do I need to invest in the better glass immediately?

The lenses I'm looking at are the 17-70 and the 50-135 Pentax lenses, they seem to fit the bill from a focal length perspective but are they the best bang for buck? what other suggestions do you knowledgeable Pentax forum folk suggest?

Got the kit lens off the ebay site and it is definitely a genuine pentax 18-55mm WR. Very pleased.

Congratulations. The kits are sometimes broken up by the resellers from what I was told allowing them more profit on the body and the lens(es) separately. Not sure but that may be where some of these lower cost, genuine, kit lenses come from. Just glad you got what you expected and at a great price.

quick shift ring

What is the "quick shift ring" that is referenced to on the 18-55 DA discussions?

I have a lense marked 18-55 DA and I have the ring with the focal length and a ring with depth of field distance. I looked at a photo fo the 18-55 DA II lens on the Pentax web site and the only difference visible was that it was marked 18-55 DA II instead of 18-55 DA.

Quick shift means you can turn the focussing ring at any time, even when the camera is in auto-focus mode. On lenses without quick shift you can't do this, the focus ring is locked to the AF motor in the camera.
