Thanks for everyone's advice on this. Given that the cheapest I had seen this lens elsewhere was 3 times the price I decided to take a punt on it. I'll have it professionally cleaned and see what happens. I'll have to find somewhere selling industrial amount of silica gel too, just to make sure...

What mirror lens is it then?

Didn't realise there were enough people out there as weird as me to warrent a whole thread on mirror lenses! I have a cheapy Opteka that is cheap in every way, but something about the quirky nature of it appealed to me (classic Pentaxian trait there I think!) so the one I'll hopefully be making use of soon is a Sigma 600mm F8.

You are not alone. I have an old Tokina RMC 500/8, which gives decent sharpness and contrast and I used it a lot with film cameras. I also have the Russion MTO 100/10, which I modified to to use it with standard eyepieces as a small telescope and finally I have the Sigma 500/4, which just needs some cleaning and then will see light again.
