DA 21mm questions

I'm looking at the DA 21 for my K-x. Right now the DA21mm is going for $599 Canadian and there is a $100 rebate from Pentax.
Here is my silly question(s) of the day; Disregarding aperture brightness/speed how does this compare to the DA-L 18-55 at the same focal length? My main concern is IQ, contrast and distortion. Is the DA 21mm worth the price tag? Thanks!

My DA21 is my favorite alongside the DA35. The compact size and rendering is just awesome for a lot of uses:

The DA 21's main draw is it's size, but it also has a little less distortion, shows a little less vignetting, is a little faster (3.2 vs. 3.5) wide open, the borders are a little sharper. Contrast is usually pretty good with all DA's, so you probably see little difference there. I really enjoyed my 21, but if you you aren't concerned about size, don't overlook the 16-45.

That's awesome! Hello from the Philippines to you guys!

My main points that make me love the DA21 really are: size, build, AF speed, rendering. Sharpness isn't jawdropping, but it's great. Using it is really a joy to use and the focal length is really great, but that's also highly subjective to each photographer.

I absolutely love my DA21. The small size of FOV make it the perfect outdoors/urban walkabout lens, IMHO. It's not so good for available-light indoors stuff, however, due to its rather slow max aperture.

BTW, Aden Camera currently list it at 440 CAN$ (+tax+shipping), including the Pentax rebate.

Thanks for the feed back everyone, much appreciated.

I've just discovered the Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20mm f3.5 SL II threads and photo examples. This looks like a option as well, MF is fine by me. I'll see what the going price tag for this is locally just to compare.

Not sure if another person vouching for the 21 will make a difference, but I've had nothing but great luck working with it. I kinda bought it on a whim when I first got my K-x because I was looking for a high quality wide prime, but now I'm really glad that I did.

If you'd like to see a series of shots I took with it at the Houston Auto Show last weekend, I've got a ton of them on my website at photo phill

Each of the photos in that series was taken with the 21mm.
