Lens noise (as in loud)

The 55-300mm kit lens that came with the Kx 18-55mm lens was quite noisy, i.e., loud. In a quiet or semi-quiet setting, it was unsettling. I sent the kit back. I'm thinking of purchasing the alternate kit with the 50-200mm lens: is it quieter? Or should I buy the body and 18-55mm and then subsequently buy another telephoto lens?

the screw drive auto focus is going to be noisy, I think, regardless of the lens. It's a tiny motor turning a little screw at a high RPM, and that screw turns countless other gears to get its job done. manual focus is the cure for this

or are you talking about the mirror slap. shutter noise and iris noise? The iris on my old old old m42 sears lens is louder than everything except the mirror slap. it's quite intimidating in high speed burst mode!

AF with DA 55-300 does seem loud. Take a look at the lens review section of pentaxforums. AF's also loud with the older FA telephoto lenses, but DA 55-300 has a long focus throw and the camera becomes prone to hunt in bad light, because the lens is slow (in terms of aperture). The cure is one of the following: manual focus, SDM, HSM, USM, etc [and a faster lens (in terms of aperture) to cure hunting].

I was referring to the auto focusing noise of the screw drive.

Is it just that lens or is this your first dslr? As the screw drive auto focusing is quite loud if your not used to it. You'll notice it in a quiet place but isn't so bad or noticeable say taking photos out on the streets.
Also i havent tried the lens your talking about but my old sigma 18-55 (biggest piece of rubbish ever) was muuuuch louder than the DA40mm i have now so there is a little variation, but still noticable

I don't think DA 55-300 was really meant for the street. BTW, the first USM lens was EF 300 mm f/2.8L USM (non-IS), released in 1987.

I have handled a few dSLRs, including the Panasonic G1 and Olympus E620, but admittedly haven't had extensive experience.

Honestly, given the noise of the shutter/mirror when you take the shot, I don't see what the big deal is with focus noise. A DSLR is not a quiet instrument. You get a skewed notion of the sound when it's right front of your face, but to someone else in the room, the focus noise is barely noticeable at all, whereas the shutter sound will turn heads.
