alternate to Sigman 70-200

I'm tired of waiting! I ordered this lens months ago - can anyone suggest a good alternative (looked at a 135 mm 2.8 prime yesterday). Any suggestions on where to find good used lenses (maybe a 135 prime with autofocus if such a thing exists). Thanks.

Oh, backup,reverse...let's try that again. Where are my manners? I'm new here, and this is my first post. amateur/hobbyist with eyes on becoming professional (not giving up my day job yet). Had a camera/cheapo darkroom setup as a kid. Gave it up for a long time and got back into photography about a year ago. This Spring I bought a K10D, 50 mm 1.7 pentax manual focus, Sigma 17-70, and I ordered the 70-200 2.8 APO.

I spoke to the Australian distributor of Sigma yesterday and they said there is no pending announcement of a 70-200 f2.8 to suit Pentax in the forseable future! I MUST have a long lens soon or I'm going to have handed off a lot of work.

I think I might have to bit the bullet and get the Bigma (50-500) because I know that is available. But I want 2.8 dammit!

I will read this thread with great interest.

Which will put it close to the August I was told initially.

I just spoke to C.R.Kennedy, Australian distributors of Pentax and Sigma, the ONLY lens they have in that kind of length in Pentax or Sigma is the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6.

This might have to do as there is a high chance I'm being flown across the country to shoot an event that I MUST have a long lens for.

I was so very close to going to Canon but was told by C.R.K. I'd have full support and that lenses were in good supply. What a joke! I wish I had gone now. The K10D is great, but it is useless without a lens to put on the front of it!

Tamron is supposed to release a 70-200mm f/2.8 soon If it's anything like their 28-75mm, I'd probably buy that over the Sigma (if it ever even materializes)

I empathize with you as I have been on the prowl for these as well. I should have plopped down the $699 for one from Cameta last summer when they still had them...

Official reply from Sigma:

The 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG lens for Pentax mount is no longer in production. We are currently in the process of producing the 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro lens for the Pentax mount. Unfortunately there is no set availablitiy date at this moment. It may not be available until the end of summer or early fall (America). We apologize for the delay and inconvenience in this matter.

If they said 2 weeks then you might be right.

It's when you don't get an ETA that you know you're in trouble.

I ran into the same issue here in Canada, I needed a longer lens and was in the market for a 2.8 (was shooting the Formula 1 weekend and will be shooting the Steelback Grand Prix this weekend), spoke with a big camera shop in my hometown who said they could get it for early June, called me a few days before the F1 and said it wasn't available I ended up scrambling for a telephoto lens and picked up the Sigma 70-300 EX DG APO (they cut me a nice deal on it because the 70-200 wasn't available). Not a bad lens, but still would've preferred the 2.8...

I spoke with the retailer again this week as I was back in my home town and they told me they won't be getting the 70-200 2.8 in a Pentax mount for quite some time yet they have 3 canon mounts in store and are "readily available to order"... grrrr.

Yes, I'm tossing up whether to go the 300mm Sigma prime until the 70-200 gets here. The two would compliment each other long term also.

Yep, I think for me the next up will be looking at something along the lines of a Bigma for some auto photography. The 70-300 has been a great lens, it just comes up short when shooting from grandstands sometimes (can't blame the lens). We'll see, I still have my fingers crossed for a 70-200 f2.8 but something tells me it's not going to be here in time for most of the events I need it for.

Not as fast but the best zoom I know.

The AF is fast and accurate, the lens is sharp as a razor and dirt cheap.

I payd mine 60 euro (abou 90 USD) and there was a analog body attached to it.

Guido

Thes are made with this lens:

I to have been waiting for the delivery of the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM Macro lens from B&H Photo, ordered almost 3 months ago. I've contacted both Sigma and B&H and keep getting told "it will be available soon". The problem is that no one has defined what "soon" is. I'm thinking of trying to get the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 EX DG IF HSM, but it's on back order. Like others in this thread I have a real need for long fast lens. I've been shooting horse shoes and have had to throw away a lot of shots of jumpers because the 100-300 I have is way to slow.

I'd be interested in hearing about any other lenses that are available.

Shawn
