The DA* 55mm is too expensive and too bulky.
I have a copy but when I go out I still put the FA 50mm f1.7 in the bag as its more compact and allows me to fit another lens in there.

Pentax should go back to pricing the FA 50mm f1.4 at a sensible price just to give new K-x buyers a sensible start.

The fa50/1.4 is now at a sensible price. It is priced right in the range of 50/1.4 lenses from other companies. Prior to this it was priced quite a bit lower than it should have been.
What pentax should do is drop the FA50/1.4 and either bring back or bring out a 50/1.8 or f/2 lens for people who want a cheap 50mm lens.
But before that, they really need to bring out a decently fast standard lens for their DSLR line.

Except that 50mm is a short telephoto.
A standard lens would be in the 30mm range.

hmmmm.....for APS-C that is. if they would make a DFA 30/1.2, I guess that would be the end of the FA31.

FA50 is doing fine as it is.
The problem with that are that the older folks remember the old pricing

I'd rather Pentax introduced a cheap DA50/1.7 to help ppl makeup their minds when they move into DSLRs. Currently the thought of having to buy a pricier 50/1.4 drives some ppl away. Actually, such ppl will eventually spend the money but Pentax just needs to administer the LBA poison in a slower more palatable size

For DA lenses, I'd wish they come up with a lower costing 17mm f3.5 the size of the DA15.

Or even a dirt cheap f/2.
The problem is that the 50 was originally the kit lens. That FL is covered by the kit zoom.
I think the way their production is set up at the moment, it suits them to have higher priced lenses. They probably don't have a lot of warehoused stock of the 50 and not many left of the FA35. If they produce a cheaper 50, they have to accept that it will be sitting around in numbers waiting to be sold and perhaps they can't afford that right now.

Well I did say for their DSLR line.
A 30/1.4 would be fine.

One of the things that this thread is presenting is how Pentax has shot themselves over time by attracting people who want cheap gear.
They have a 15/4, but someone wants a faster lens that has approximately the same focal length and wants it cheaper?
Someone else thinks the 50/1.4 pricing isn't sensible when it is right in the pack with 50/1.4 lenses from other manufacturers?

The word cheap comes up far too often (including in one of my posts).
The days of cheap are gone.

I agree, although I think they should sell a cheap lens (that is poor construction) for cheap for beginning users. All plastic, guaranteed to fall apart under moderate usage within a year, but price wise, say 120 dollars.

You definitely get what you pay for and less now, since the US dollar has taken such a beating in the last couple of years. I like the current pricing schemes. Sell the cameras cheap enough to get folks in with Pentax, sell high quality lenses for high quality prices.

Now if they could just fix SDM...

The Nikon 50/1.4 lenses are 300eur cheaper than the FA50 here in Finland. 500eur cheaper than the 55/1.4.

I think the gap for pentax is a real entry level low cost lenses, can get the Nikon 50 1.8 for around 120$, something similar (also at 30mm * 70mm) would really entice new entry level buyers.

Also lets face it... maybe the FA501.4 is better than a 50 1.8... but not 2x better to justify the cost for a beginner.

How about 18 f2
I'll second that (although I already will be happy with f/2.8).

There's an FA 50, which is the best 50 except for the Sigma (larger, heavier, more expensive).

There's the 40.

There's the 43.

There's the DA*55.

I think there's enough choice.

How does the price of DA* 55 f/1.4 compare to the weather sealed Canon 50 f/1.2 (the only other weather sealed fast fifty with a built-in motor by any manufacturer)?
