Having both a SMC 300 f/4 and DA 55-300, it seems that the SMC is a little sharper.
My eye(s) require a +3 diopter setting on body.
With DA,When I use autofocus to get it close and then quick shift via katzeye to fine "tune" things get blury. Do different lenses require different diopter settings ?

No, it's just that the 300/4 is sharper than the zoom.
