LBA: first test shots with Voigtlander APO Lanthar 125/2.5 Macro (7pics)

I ordered a Voigtlander APO 125/2.5 Macro lens in Pentax KA mount and it was delivered within a few days. I got it last Monday, but the weather and time did not allow me to test the lens before. Here are the very first test shots taken with this lens.

(All photos taken in jpg with K10D)

1/320s f/4.5 iso800

1/250s f/13.0 iso500

1/100s f/13.0 iso500

1/320s f/5.0 iso500

1/250s f/7.1 iso800

I even tried some bees, but these are really difficult to catch:
1/500s f/10.0 iso1000

1/320s f/10.0 iso800

Comments and critiques are welcome.

This sure seems like a dandy lens.

My attempts at CR:
#1> more DOF, increase from f4.5 to... f8?
#2> less DOF, background bokeh not so nice as this lens can produce, flowers look good but would be better if the bokeh in the background was more smooth
#3> again I think less DOF, that will cause less diffraction and sharper center. I think..I dont know... some fill light to lighten it up?
#4> very nice bokeh, no comments
#5> no comment
#6> yeah that is hard! especially with an MF lens!! only way is to prefocus and just wait I guess. I like the flower and the 2 OOF flowers like it in the pic, I think sth interesting could have been created by focusing on those
#7> I think some diffused flash is needed to really bring out the details in the fly.

thanks for sharing these, I like the concept of this lens although I prolly will never get one myself since its too close to my 100mm macro.

oh and Im no macro expert so take my comments as what they are, amateur suggestions

Thank you Andreas for your critiques. These are my very first tries with this lens and I have certainly room to improve, especially in mastering DOF to achieve best bokeh.

Dominique, Congrads on the lens.

I have not yet used the lens in the sun. But wide open used in overcast sky creates beautiful bokeh and colour!

Nice pictures. Looks like a winning lens. When the lens is at 1:1 what is the working distance from the front of lens? Does this lens have the electrical contacts for Pentax to work wide open?
thanks

Thank you for all your comments. I must say it is a great lens and I like it more and more.

rhermans: the bee in flight was taken more or less by chance.

barondla: the minimum focusing distance of the lens is 38cm, I guess this is where 1:1 is reached, but focusing is a bit difficult because the DOF is very narrow at F2.5 at that distance. The lens has Pentax K-A mount, with electrical contacts for aperture control from the body. It does however not communicate the focal length to the body, so the menu asking to select the focal length appears each time the K10D is switched on.

Thanks for the info. Sure looks and sounds like a great lens. All macros are tough to focus at 1:1 or there abouts.
thanks

The working distance at 1:1 is about 8 inches to the subject. I find this lens to be a very versatile lens bacause of it's ability to shoot as a tele one minute and as a macro that really gives a new meaning to subject isolation thru differential focusing. Already extremely sharp wide-open and it keeps on getting better at smaller apertures. And the MTF curve is simply amazing. The lens is really solid and heavy but it really delivers quality wise. Unfortunately Cosina has planned to cease production for Pentax PKA mount, so this lens will get be harder to find. Guess TS and I are one of the lucky few to own this fantastic lens.
