50-135mm for sports??

hey I'm going to see the womens snowboard cross events and I can rent a 50-135mm

I have a da50-200mm and a FAJ 75-300mm

I find my DA has trouble getting a focus lock at infinity, and don't want to miss shots because it refuses to fire a shot, and I've never been impressed with anything I shoot with the FAJ. So my thought was to rent a 70-200 or a longer but the best I can get is the DA 50-135mm or a bigma!

Thoughts?

It's going to depend on how close you can get to the action. I have seen guys shoot superpipe and slopestyle with a fisheye but you have to get close and the skiiers and snowboarders have to know where you are. The Bigma would certainly do the trick but it's kind of heavy and you'll probably need a monopod. Either of the lenses you own should do the job. You probably won't be focusing at infinity and if its a sunny bright day, you should be able to shoot at f8-f11 to get good DOF and have the fast shutter speeds you need. I have used a Sigma 70-300 at such events and had good results.

in my opinion, too wide unless you are practically on top of the action.

50-135 has a long travel focus and is not too fast for sport, but i use my 50-135 very successfully on MTB downhill sport events. Usually i use aperture above 5.6 to compensate short DOF and slow focus. I have best results when use prefocused techniques with my pentax DSLR for sport.
