lens mark in red on the scale?

I see on my older lenses that have a aperture/focal distance/DOF scale there is always a red line to the left of the centre index line, what is this for?
on my smc pentax -A 80-200 to the left of the scale is the same red line and to the left of that line another red line with the number 80 in red, what does that indicate?

It's the infrared focus mark. Infrared waves focus behind the focal plane, so you were supposed to focus on your subject and then move the distance on the scale to the red mark.

Forgive the crappy wording, writing's not my strong suit.
