Pentax 50mm vs Sigma 50mm?

Has anyone compared these babies next to one another?

Pentax Lens Review and Specification Database - 50mm F1.4

PentaxForums.com Third-Party Pentax Lens Review Database - 50mm F1,4 EX DG

Yeah, i like a fast 50mm for portraiture etc, grabbed the Pentax last week but then spotted the Sigma one, both seem to be rated highly by users... Hard to work out the true (local) value of what we can expect to pay here in Oz however the Pentax cost nearly A$700, despite listed here around $US200)

Was i too rash in jumping to the Pentax F1.4?
Is there some F1.2 ive heard about?

PS - i still like to muck about with film (in theory) hence going for full frame.

The Sigma is a lot bigger and heavier.

Sigma 50/1.4

pros: pretty bokeh, sharp lens, HSM
cons: expensive, big and heavy lens

FA50/1.4

pros: pretty bokeh, sharp lens, cheap, small and light
cons: looks cheap, a bit soft compared to the Sigma (arguable).

50 1.2

pros: half-stop faster, unique bokeh at wide open, specialty lens, great for portraiture, really bright. sharp lens.
cons: manual focus, the A version is expensive, K version is affordable but needs stop down metering.

Here's when the Sigma does not perform well:

Look at the disks of confusion.

By f/2 the disks of confusion are no longer onions.

BTW, both lenses are "full frame" compatible, but with the Sigma you lose AF on a film body.

EDIT: At f/1.6,

In the "new" market both compare well, the Sigma arguably slightly better but much more expensive and heavy and large. The only visible differences, if any, will be wide open.

If you like used lenses, you could try to find an f1,7 version of the Pentax 50s. They are slightly sharper, less expensive, and generally perrform as well. The bokeh is different, not better or worse, just different.

A 50 f2 could be another, really cheap option.

OK sounds like the Pentax F1.4 was a pretty good buy then

Perhaps not utterly mind blowing, but pretty damn good value for F1.4... I love the crazy small DOF!
