Good Standard and Telephoto zoom lens combo for under $1000

Hi all,

I was looking to get a good standard and telephoto zoom lens for my K-X, which is arriving tomorrow. I really dislike the idea of constantly trading lenses so I wanted to get two well-performing multipurpose lenses and be done with it (for the most part).

I was suggested by a friend to get the Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8 for standard zoom and Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 for telephoto. I believe both of these should be under $1000 and should fit most of my photography needs. How does this combo sound?

Any other suggestions for good multi-purpose lenses would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Hi

Great price & combo!! For a little more, you can add a used camera body...

Not sure how experienced you are with this, but do be aware tht those lenses - especially the 70-200 - will *dwarf* the camera. Chances are excellent you'll quickly tire of lugging that thing around when not necessary, and will eventually opt for a slower but more sensibly sized telephoto zoom to replace the 70-200 in your bag for casual use.

I haven't owned the 70-200/2.8 for the Pentax system, but I can tell you that on the Nikon system, that lens is HUGE. You may at first may not mind it but then it starts to get to you and you won't want to carry a huge heavy lens. I stopped carrying it and started carrying my 70-300 (for nikon) which was much lighter and smaller + took pretty damn good pictures. I don't doubt the 55-200 or 55-300 would be better suited for you.

With enough light, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the 70-200 and one of the "cheaper" lenses.

Now the 17-50/2.8 is a nice compact lens and I have used it first hand (on a Sony system) and found it to be excellent.

I use my 16-50/2.8 and my 70-200/2.8 all the time and carry these bread and butter lenses nearly everywhere. I find them indispensible. And if I use primes for the same reach, these are neither smaller nor more lightweight. So, if you are decided to invest in good fast glass, I personally find that a very sensible route.

Ofcourse there are alternatives. In the longer department, the Pentax 55-300 would be smaller and give more reach, though at the dispense of two f-stops.

In the standard zoom category, I do not know the Tammy, but the Sigma 18-50/2.8 is comparetively small (at least compared to the Pentax DA) - may be that's an option to save some space.

Depending on your presentation goals, the two stops given up by the 55-300 might be compensated by stops gained by the K-x's high ISO performance.

From examples I've seen here the K-x at ISO 3200 out-of-the-camera may be suitable for electronic display.

I have that combo and love it, but as others have stated, the 70-200 is not a small lens.

I use the Tamron 28-75/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 combo. The 28-75 is barely bigger than the kit lens, and it will still be useful if Pentax ever goes FF. It is almost always on my camera.

For my kids' sports and music performances, the 70-200 is perfect. Sure it is big, but so are the results.

On APS-C, another consideration is the Sigma 50-150 2.8 + 1.4x TC.

It will give you an exceptionally sharp 50-150 2.8, or a still very sharp 70-210 f/4, and it's much smaller than the 70-200 2.8 zooms.

Here are the Tamron 70-200 2.8, Pentax da 50-135 (almost exactly the same size as the Sigma,) Tamron 28-75 and 77ltd:
