Smaller filter for a bigger lens. 52-49mm?

Due to a financial problem (tax hit me in an unexpected way ) I sold my DA15, DA40 and my FA77. So now I have the K7 with the DA18-55WR, the DA35 and the F135 left. All my filters I had bought for my limiteds and so they are 49mm. For my next hiking tours I will use now the DA18-55WR for the range under the DA35. What do you think, will it be possible to use my 49mm filters with a step down ring on the 52mm 18-55 lens? On my hiking tours I have a tripod with my and I plan to use the 18-55 at f5.6 or f8 for landscape and so.

Will it work?

Yes, it will work.

This is only one filter size difference. You may have some vignetting at the 18mm setting, but I doubt it.

Hi Mike. Sounds good.
I hope the fact of using at f 5.6 and smaller will solve the vignetting problem.

Coincidence. I received my 18-55mm WR on Friday and just ordered a 52 to 49mm ring. I should be able to post the hit we take at 18mm on Wednesday when the ring arrives. I think the thickness of the filter used will play a large role so those old fat CPLs may be a problem. I will know in a couple days for sure.

And the verdict is in. Using the Adorama brand 52mm->49mm reducer and a Hoya HMC UV filter I found it gets dicey at 21mm and under depending on how close the focus is (more vignetting).

Standard filters look fine above 21mm although vignetting might be measureable it was not noticable.

It vignettes badly at 18mm regardless of distance.

A standard size CPL is out of the question. I don't own any thin CPL filters to test with.
